Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy has confirmed that injury-jinxed winger Michael Kightly has been forced to ease back on training, as he bids to finally regain full fitness.

The 24-year-old missed most of last season due to a combination of foot, ankle and knee problems and is still some way away from being available for selection once again.

McCarthy told the Express & Star:"He's still progressing and we're just trying to get him back on the training ground for more sessions.

"He was out there last week, but we've just had to rein him back a little – which is the sort of thing which often happens.

"He probably looks at the team now and sees that moving from where he is at the moment to getting straight back into the Premier League is a bit of a quantum leap."

Of the possibility of a future loan to help Kightly's recovery, McCarthy added:"I am sure he's had all those thoughts himself but I've not had that discussion with him yet.

"He's still not ready to get back out there."
