Sir Alex Ferguson has criticised Arsene Wenger's negative comments concerning Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes.

Scholes, 35, has found himself in the spotlight at the start of the new season, with his impressive form leading to suggestions of an international recall in the twilight of his career.

The midfielder scored his 150th goal for the Red Devils last weekend but Wenger's decision to speak about the "dark side" of his game in the build-up has irritated Ferguson.

Scholes has a reputation for mis-timing tackles and Wenger bucked the trend when he chose to highlight that rather than join the chorus of managers waxing lyrical about his talents.

"I don't know why Arsene Wenger said that," said Ferguson.

"When you are asked your opinion about someone with the ability and performance level of Paul Scholes I don't see why you should say that.

"It is very easy to look at the dark side of any player. I could say it about one of the Arsenal players in particular and everybody knows that but there is no need.

"Paul is not the best tackler but he has not injured anyone in his time here.

"You should focus on the strengths and abilities he shows and also the contribution he has made to English football over 18 years. It is phenomenal."

Meanwhile, Ferguson does not expect Scholes to reverse his decision to retire from international football and make an England return.

Scholes turned down an approach from England coach Fabio Capello to come out of retirement for this summer's World Cup finals after citing a lack of time to make his decision.

"I don't think it will happen. Definitely not," he added.
