Blackburn Rovers have denied reports suggesting they failed to get a work permit for Bulgarian Ivelin Popov on transfer deadline day.

Several media outlets had reported that Rovers were unable to land the 22-year-old Litex Lovechs star because of visa problems but the club insist that was not the case.

Rovers chairman John Williams has confirmed that the club wold only have made a move for Popov if Jason Roberts had left Ewood Park, adding: "The reports are not true."

Popov has scored three goals in 15 matches for his country since making his debut in 2007 and is expected to feature in Friday's Euro 2012 qualifier between Bulgaria and England at Wembley.

Rovers had reportedly been ready to pay £2.5million for Popov if Roberts had been sold.
