Robert Pires could be in line to play some part at Ewood Park on Sunday, as he makes his return to the Premier League after four years away. His presence should give a lift to a young squad that has already had a decent week, with a strong showing against Manchester United, before late goals cost them maximum points.

Blackburn were poor in defeat against Tottenham last time out- although they were unlucky to have a couple of shots cleared off the line, defensively they were slack and were roundly punished.

Such is the strength of Blackburn’s home form that it is very hard to look anywhere but a home win here. Villa’s youngsters are undoubtedly capable, but will need a great deal of patience if they are to emerge with the points. A win could catapult them into the top five, although they may well need help from an old French hand to do it.

Prediction: 1-1
