Arguably the right transfer policy for Liverpool this January

Roy HodgsonCome the January transfer window Liverpool Manager Roy Hodgson and Director of Football Strategy Damien Comolli have a tough job on their hands. They have to show that their club still has the ambitions of a top club without the exorbitant budget that has been available in previous transfer windows. The aim, I’m sure will be a push for fourth place in the Premier League. To help them meet their end and to placate the fans, new recruits are sure to be necessary.

The club’s owners Fenway Sports Group are sure to insist that Roy Hodgson is more careful with his spending than the likes of Rafa Benitez have been in the past. Speaking to the press about the matter Hodgson said, “I would be very disappointed if I went out in January and spent a lot of money on the wrong players and then found that come the summer, we are no better off.”

So what exactly is his aim over the January transfer window? What kind of players are the club looking to add to their squad? Hodgson’s belief is that the emphasis has shifted from quantity to quality. The new additions must be such “that everyone who watches us, fans, journalists, can see why we have bought them, like Raul Meireles. We are looking for players who will make us better.”

The Portuguese midfielder joined Liverpool this August and following Steven Gerrard’s hamstring injury has taken centre stage in the Reds’ midfield. His performances have made him a fan favourite and his commitment to Liverpool’s cause has often made his fellow teammates look lachrymose in comparison.

It’s certainly true that more players like Meireles would help to bolster Liverpool’s attempt to earn a position in next season’s Champions League. With limited funds available it’s clear that Liverpool can’t afford to bring in lots of unproven players.

The focus must now be placed upon quality, not quantity. I would recommend going after players like Luis Suarez and Moussa Sissoko who are really going to add something to the Liverpool squad. The reports that Liverpool are interested in the likes of Wigan’s Charles N’Zogbia does not fill me with much hope.

If necessary, Liverpool can utilise the players they have in swap deals or to rack up the finances necessary for transfer fees. It seems to me that the likes of Maxi, Skrtel and Spearing have come to the end of their time at Anfield.

It’s time for a January clearout. Once the manager has got rid of the dead weight, the focus can be placed upon bringing in players with the quality to help make Liverpool competitors once more.

Whether Roy Hodgson has the managerial nous to do this remains to be seen. January will be a big month at Liverpool Football Club.

Eh, last thing we wanna do is have a January clearout, we need every player fit and pushing hard, yes add to the squad in every way possible but while we still have any chance of a top four finish then the squad must stick together, besides, Skrtels a good still young player?!

Why Liverpol has to only fight for top 4 places? This has been going on since Rafa’s time, will somebody understand the fans plight. We want no. 1 and nothing else matter…

You guys are both wrong, the players we have at the moment aren’t good enough to challenge for trophies this season. The only way to bring these players in is to sell the players we have that aren’t making the grade. Skrtel isn’t good enough. There are a number more I could name that aren’t Liverpool quality. If you’re happy with the players we have no then you’re happy with mundanity.

Hi Livemad, I agree that Liverpool fans shouldn’t have to be content with only a top four spot. This season however, I think that’s the best you can hope for given your bad start.

We need pace in midfield, we need to look at the full back positions, we need another striker. Kuyt should stay too, Glen Johnson should be considered for the right wing and Martin Kelly played at right back. Ricky van Wolfswinkel looks to fit the bill at the right age with experience and at the right price. No to Defoe. He doesn’t have 60 goals in his career. Gervinho is a prospect and could provide the pace and goals lacking from the wings. Why not bring Scott Dann home to Liverpool?

Great, that’s why we have added Paulsen, Konchesky, Jovanovic, ACole & Jones and trying to recruit CCole, Bently & Zamora.

Woy the joker, only thing he is good at is Rafa bashing. He is a egoistic snob, who can’t take that, Rafa was a better manager, played better football & colleted the likes of Nando, Alonso, Mascherano, Jhonson, Agger & Acqualini (See him for Juve).

I agree with the owners of Liverpool, we are now practically half way through the season and we’ve not had much luck in recent matches, so the lights of suarez and sissoko both strikers can boost the confidence of the squad as well as boosting the amount of goals scored with a little help of 2 of the top players in the world today! Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

Suarez is coming to the Premier League at some stage. Liverpool have to make sure that it’s them who snap him up. He and Torres together would be a fierce combination. Make it happen!

NESV are baseball men and can spend £100M and more on one man but have no interest in LFC other than milking the fan base worldwide before it truly crumbles…
