My ‘Great Britain XI’ for the 2012 London Olympics

The decision to select a GB football team for the 2012 Olympics has brought a mixed response within the game. Some players have welcomed the decision and suggested they would be keen to play, while managers and the football federations have questioned the fact it will impinge on their members preparations for their league programme. The very fact the Euro Championships will also be taking place some weeks earlier only goes to underline the worries that some football managers are likely to have and why they will be hesitant to release some of their players for the Olympics.
The ruling for the Olympic teams is the players must be 23 years of age or under; although three players over that age can also be included within the squad.
With that in mind I have included my Olympic XI for Team GB

northern ireland is not in great britain. this is a plain and simple fact. the official title of the uk, which nobody over there seems to know, is ‘the united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland’. northern ireland is not therefore part of gb, but part of the uk, two different things.

A couple of token non English players, or a so called “UK” team composed entirely of English players, when the Jock, Welsh and N Irish Eu Regions FA’s pull their players out, and managed by a Jock? – stick your “Team GB” and stick the sham that is the laughably titled “UK!”, lets have an ENGLISH team for the Olympics, and not just for Football, for all of the Sports! and while we are at it lets have an English Parliament and Government!.

glad wales and that have pulled out tbh because our players wouldnt get noticed, only the english players who most of the are way overated because you english cant get it into your heads that some of your amasing players are just average especially when compared to countries like spain for example.

The term “Team GB” was adopted in 2008. It used to be “Great Britain and Northern Ireland”. “Team GB” was just considered a hipper way of saying all that. Why the term “UK” wasn’t used instead is best known only to the British Olympic Association.

Not that i give a toss cos i certainly aint a brit, but this is the team I would pick.
Hart, walker, J. Evans, Smalling, Gibbs, Walcott, Fletcher, Wilshere, Bale, Ramsey, Carroll. Five man midfield, Ramsey playing behind Andy. Bale and Walcott/Walker supplying Andy from wings. Hart, Johnny Evans and Fletcher the overage players. Any it doesn’t matter cos the scots and the welsh won’t join anyway. Fair play to them for diggin the heels in. Go team Gambia!

The olympics being held in your country, doesn’t come round that often.so we need to grab the chance to showcase our sports men and women.and for this we are one nation together.I can’t see what the problem is,I’ve always wanted to see a great britain in the olympics, and now we can.I just hope the top players agree to play, and we all get behind team gb.and hopefully we will be gold medalist, come on gb !!!!!!

You have got to be kidding me! That’s the best you could come up with. Andy Carroll! Seriously! He’s useless! What about Neil Taylor at left back? What about Stephen naismith, Steven Davis, Aaron Ramsey. Much better than the English shower you’ve selected
