The Champions kicked off their defence of the title with a 2-1 win away against West Brom whilst Tottenham had a week off as their game with Everton was postponed due to the London riots.
Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young, on his debut, impressed against the Baggies and it looks as if the England pair could be about to strike up a highly effective partnership. At the other end of the field new keeper David de Gea saw his otherwise comfortable performance become overshadowed by another mistake letting Shane Long’s shot go under his arms and into the net. Spurs have had an extra week to prepare for this game and their Europa League game against Hearts on Thursday could provide Harry Redknapp with a chance to assess his players before the trip to Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Spurs boss may opt to rest some of his senior players for Sunday as they have a crippling injury list with five players taking solace in the treatment room. Luka Modric, Tom Huddlestone, Steven Pienaar, Willam Gallas and Jermaine Jenas are missing and gives Redknapp a severe selection dilemma. The hosts have also been decimated with Rafael, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Darren Fletcher all set to sit out Sunday’s game. However Javier Hernandez has an outside chance of returning from concussion although he’s likely to be on the bench. Phil Jones could make his full United debut alongside Johnny Evans in defence with Sir Alex Ferguson’s first choice pairing injured.
