Pardew targets Manchester United ace

Reports from The Daily Mail and Daily Express have Newcastle manager Alan Pardew being linked with making a move for Manchester United misfit Gabriel Obertan.

Obertan, now 22-years old, arrived in Manchester two years ago from French outfit Bordeaux for a fee of around £3 million and has failed to break into the first team setup on a regular basis. The Frenchman is thought to want out of Old Trafford to kick-start his flagging career, and asked for a move during last January’s transfer window. He has come close to joining Lille in his homeland, and Belgium giants Anderlecht however Newcastle is now a possible destination, with manager Pardew known to be interested in him.

Pardew rates the French winger, who was recommended by none other than current French boss Laurent Blanc, and is thought to be looking at ways to attract the former French under-21 man to St. James’ Park before the season kicks off, along with managing director Derek Llambias.

Newcastle United could provide a fresh start for Obertan and give him more of a consistent run of first team action. The magpies would look to sign him outright, but a loan-deal initially looks the more likely option. Both United managers met yesterday over a separate topic, giving Pardew the opportunity to discuss any potential deal.
