Derided as the epitome of the modern greedy footballer, Dutch goliath Winston Bogarde arrived at Stamford Bridge just as Gianluca Vialli left his managerial position. His successor, Claudio Ranieri, saw no place for Bogarde and his £40k-a-week wages – but couldn’t persuade the defender to leave. Bogarde made 11 appearances in all for Chelsea, and just one of those in the last three-and-a-half years of his contract, while earning over £15million in wages. “When you are offered those millions you take them,” he told Dutch journalist Marcel Rozer in 2006. “I may be one of the worst buys in Premiership history, but I don’t care.”
