Two second half Wayne Rooney penalties gave Manchester United a 2-0 win over Romanian side Otelul Galati on Tuesday night, as the Premier League champions recorded their first win of this season’s competition.

Spot kicks on the 64th and 90th minutes ensured victory for the Old Trafford outfit, with the only black mark against the performance the sending off of returning defender Nemanja Vidic.

Sir Alex Ferguson was happy with the win, stating that it was always going to be a difficult fixture due to the location.

“I think in a lot of these away games you have to work to get victories, it’s not easy and they made it very difficult for us,” he told Sky Sports.

“The possession figures showed we were in control of the game and in the second half we improved a great deal.

“I’m satisfied with the result. It was a long night and we had to be patient and work the way through the game,” he stated.

Vidic was dismissed after 67 minutes for a tackle on Gabriel Giurgui, and the Scottish coach felt the decision was a bit of an over-reaction.

“He raised his foot and in the context of a lot of referees’ interpretation, particularly in Europe, I can see why, but it was very harsh I think,” Ferguson concluded.

In the other game in Group C, goals from Oscar Cardozo and Bruno Cesar gave Benfica a 2-0 away win against Basel and moves the Portuguese team to the top of the pool.
