Alcaraz charged for spitting act

Wigan defender Antolin Alcaraz has been charged by the FA, after investigation of claims by Wolves captain Richard Stearman that the defender spat at him during Sunday’s game.

Television footage clearly shows the Paraguay international spitting at Stearman in the closing minutes of the Latics’ 3-1 defeat to Mick McCarthy’s men.

Referee Lee Probert did not pick up on the incident on Sunday, but the FA have confirmed that action is forthcoming.

“Wigan Athletic‘s Antolin Alcaraz has today been charged by The FA for spitting at an opponent,” an official statement from the governing body reads.

“The incident, which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video, relates to his side’s game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

“The player has until 6pm on November 8, 2011 to respond to the charge. If the player admits the charge he may accept an automatic three match suspension.”

Alcaraz’s actions have been criticised by many in the game, with Mick McCarthy in particular vocal over the shameful act.
