Liverpool heap more pressure on Villas-Boas

Liverpool have beaten Chelsea at Stamford Bridge for the second time in ten days, as they  prevailed in a 2-0 win in the Carling Cup quarter finals.

Second half goals from Maxi Rodriguez and Martin Kelly kept the Merseysiders’ current momentum and good run of form going, and will add pressure to already struggling Blues boss Andre Villas Boas.

Andy Carroll also missed a penalty for the visitors in the first half, in what could have been an even more damning score for the home side.

The Anfield club will now be in the draw for the semi-finals, and will know that two more wins can ensure their first piece of silverware since winning the FA Cup back in 2006.

Kenny Dalglish was upset with his side’s congested fixture list in the build up to the game, but expressed his delight at his players’ efforts in the midweek win.

“I don’t know if we took Chelsea apart but we were delighted with the way we played. We’ve had a good day and we deserved to go through,” he told Sky Sports.

“The way we’re progressing is more significant than reaching the semi-final of a cup that’s been cheapened by the actions of the people who run it.

“But that doesn’t mean to say we wouldn’t love to win it. We’ve got our reward and we’ll look forward to the next game,” he concluded.

Liverpool travel to London in their next game also as they take on Fulham at Craven Cottage on Monday night, whilst Chelsea take on Newcastle on Saturday.
