Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has admitted that he is keen to become the club’s all-time top goalscorer, as he chases down Sir Bobby Charlton’s tally of 249 goals.
The England international has bagged 158 goals for the Red Devils since moving from Everton as a teenager, and continues to be Sir Alex Ferguson’s main man in attack.
With the record 92 strikes away, Rooney has stated that over the next five to six years it will motivate him from a personal perspective.
“It would be fantastic if ever I could reach such a record and become the all-time top scorer for Manchester United. I would be absolutely thrilled to do it,” he told The Sun.
“I look at it and I certainly feel I’m capable of doing it over the next five or six years. If I do, then it would be an incredible achievement for me personally.
“I would be so honoured and proud. Sir Bobby Charlton is an absolute legend, a true great and it would be amazing to overtake his record which has stood for so long.
“But while it is an ambition of mine I know that in this game you can’t take anything for granted – you can never be sure of anything in football.
“Injuries can happen, all sorts of things can happen but yes, if I stay fit and in form then I have a real chance,” he concluded.

More statues around Old Trafford than in Madam Tussauds. If he has his way with the legend Ryan Giggs. And Wayne to follow.;)
.
Waynes problem of course is United’s short term problem and the postion he is being asked to play. Not conjunctive to scoring freely in his more familiar role as the spearhead of the attack.Does he complain?. Not a word of revolt, he applies himself, as the manager asks of him.Rightly so, those in the past that have crossed the line, are generaly shown a short sharp, exit.
.
This target of Wayne’s and I for one would be delighted if he achieved it, is very interesting and the facts it through’s up.
His most successfull year was 2009/10 scoring 33 goals.21 more goals ahead of second placed, Dimitar Berbatov. We lost the league bye 1 point although Wayne almost bye his individual efforts in front of goal, dragged United over the line.
To be scuppered at the hands as we know, of officials decision’s at Stamford Bridge(twice) and Old Trafford.
Some things just never change.! lol.
Not forgetting the wonderfull disguised pass back from Gerrard at Anfield to hand the ball directly to Didier Drogba, to be unopposed to fire pass,Pepe Reina.Job done.
.
Its worth noting what Wayne is facing to be regarded a ‘great’ goal scorer, some serious competition. To be come a legend and considered lethal.
.
Bobby Charlton….758 Appearances, 249 goals….Strike rate….32.8%
.
Wayne Rooney….338 Appearances,158 goals….Strike rate….46.74%.
.
(1)Ruud van Nistelrooy…200 Appearances,150 goals…Strike rate…68.5%.
.
(2)Dennis Violet…293 Appearances,179 Goals….strike rate…61.1%.
.
I hope he keeps banging them in, wether we like it or not, he is now the most potent and leathal finisher at the football club.
