Arsene Wenger has told Arsenal fans to treat former player Samir Nasri with respect when Manchester City travel to the Emirates Stadium in the Carling Cup on Tuesday, and to focus their energies on supporting their team.
The Premier League giants meet in the Cup quarter finals, and it will be the first time that the France international has faced his former club since leaving North London in the summer.
Despite this, Wenger has stressed that the crowd should focus on supporting the hosts rather than heckling Nasri.
“You want to respect the players who have played for us, that is what we expect,” Wenger told reporters.
“But it is always more important to support our team on Tuesday night, than to be negative towards the players of Manchester City.
“What is important is we are united to win the game,” he stated.
Both teams are expected to field fringe players and weaker sides, but Wenger is committed to trying to win the match despite putting the Premier League as his main priority.
“The championship is more important than the Carling Cup, but on the night we will want to win the game.
“It is important to keep our run going because every win makes us stronger, so we will not go out there not caring about winning,” he concluded.
