Liverpool have received a hammer blow with the news that influential midfielder Lucas Leiva will miss the remainder of the 2011-12 season through injury.

The Brazil international was stretchered off in The Reds’ 2-0 win over Chelsea in the Carling Cup in midweek, after picking up a knee injury in a collision against Andre Villas Boas’ men.

The South American had a scan on the injured knee on Wednesday, and the Anfield club has confirmed the worst possible outcome.

“Liverpool FC said today a scan had confirmed an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in Lucas Leiva’s left knee,” a statement on the club’s official website reads.

“The Brazil international will undergo surgery and unfortunately be ruled out for the remainder of the current campaign.”

Kenny Dalglish will be disappointed with Lucas’ unavailability, as he has become a key member of the Liverpool starting XI and impressed with combative performances this season.

The ex-Gremio man expressed his feelings on Twitter, and tried to stay upbeat.

“Hi all. Just to confirm that I will be out until the rest of season. I am really sad with the news because I was enjoying a lot on the pitch,” he stated.

“I am sure I will come back stronger and I will achieve everything that I dream with the LFC shirt.

“I am sure I’ll NEVER WALK ALONE.”

The Merseysiders have recalled Jonjo Shelvey from his loan at Blackpool and also have Jay Spearing available to deputise, but may look to bring in a new face during the January transfer window.
