Does Rooney need support?

Posted by: Mike England Po..., Mon 11th Feb 2008
On our post Swiss game podcast Gaz, Warren and I briefly touched on the issue of Wayne Rooney's position in the team. So how will Capello get the best out of Rooney? For me I think playing as part of a front three will bring out the best in him, he's not a prolific goal scorer for England anyway so I don't think we lose anything playing at the front of the attacking three as his creativity and strength will create openings for others. With a bit of time the players will hopefully adapt to Capello's system but the early signs for me were positive. Let us know what you think and will air a few views on the next podcast. Cheers, Mike.

It depends on who is up
It depends on who is up front with Rooney. He creates openings but does this with a quick touch or a 1-2 and it's important that he has a partnership with someone as he does with Ronaldo. Crouch isn't the right partner as he is all head and rubbery legs and Rooney expects quick balls and one touches and Crouch wants it in the air. If he could have a regular partner to play off and create an understanding then he will score more and set more up. The problem with having a front 3 is that you could lose the midfield strength in Gerrard or Lampard because you would have the 3 up front and the holding midfielder (Hargreaves, Barry???) and then the 2 side midfielders (Bentley, Cole??)So would you have Rooney and another striker (I would prefer to start with someone like Defoe and then change it if needed depending on how the game is going) backed up by Gerrard or Lampard hanging outside the area? The good thing with Capello is that he seems willing to try things and as much as people/managers bemoan the friendlies they serve a very good purpose.

Amazingly enough I actually
Amazingly enough I actually agree with Mike!! I think playing Rooney in a central role of 3 forwards is the only role for him in Capello's england team. (Not necessarily what will get the best out of Rooney as I think he would prefer to have someone up there with him.) He should be made to compete for that one spot with Crouch and Owen. Then you have a choice of lennon, swp, bentley on the right of rooney and joe cole or ashley young on the left of the him. Nice selection headache and I think at last in Capello we have a manager who will pick players to play the system not necessarily the most high profile players. Gareth England Podjockey

"Crouch isn't the right
"Crouch isn't the right partner as he is all head and rubbery legs" Good point well made. We can't ever be considered a serious footballing force with this kind of player in the side. Best description of a player i've heard in quite a while!

In my opinion Rooney is one
In my opinion Rooney is one of the most disappointing and overrated players around at the moment. He wouldn't even be in my England team.
