Football FanCast columnist Jim McKendry looks south of the border at
Arsenal football club and feels the club is in very safe hands under Wenger and
has challenged his critics, to name the players who they think Arsene should bring
in to guarantee success.
Arsene
Wenger has not had shall we say a pleasant last few months in English football.
A combination of injuries, poor results and now player unrest has constituted
the bitterest of pills that will be fully digested when the Frenchman looks at
pictures of Sir Alex Ferguson or Avram Grant holding aloft a Premier League trophy.
Make no mistake about it should have been Arsenal's - the outstanding team for
two thirds of the season and I'm sure that the ‘professor' is just at pains to work out how it happened.
Wenger has been on the end of some criticisms, probably for the first time in his tenure and you find it hard to comprehend. I remember Arsenal fans talking on websites and message boards in the summer claiming they were worried they may not finish in the top four with Tottenham set to eclipse them - so why the sudden change of stance? Has Wenger merely been a victim of his early season success? It was always going to be a season of transition and maybe Arsenal fans should embrace the fact that maybe progress of the football club has proved a lot quicker than expected. The club are in extremely safe hands and to suggest anyone else could be doing a better job, under the constraints, than Wenger is foolish.
One of the major criticisms that have been levied at Wenger is that he doesn't spend big or bring big names to the club as that will obviously guarantee success in some quarters. The Frenchman has brought 7 trophies to the club in 11 yrs with much the same policy, so why start criticising it now? Wenger made it clear in yesterday's press conference that he is more than aware additions need to be made but feels the signing of a big name star doesn't guarantee success.
Reported on Sky Sports:
"What we need next year is two or three player's maybe. We need talent. I think a huge player is better than a huge name. You have huge names who produce very little at the moment.
"But don't worry; we will have a team to compete for the championship next year."
It is clear when listening to the press conference in full that Wenger has a great appreciation for the values of the football club and will always work to maintain them. I don't know if that was an indirect swipe at those who feel that the wage structure must be removed or he is simply highlighting the constraints he works in - it would certainly be interesting to see what would happen if Cesc Fabregas came in and asked for a bigger contract, I mean let's face it he is in a somewhat different league to Flamini.
So Wenger has made it clear that he will look to bring in two or three names in the summer, which will undoubtedly appease some as well as infuriate others. I'm just keen to know who Arsenal fans think should be brought in. It is very easy to say that Wenger should spend big, but on whom? How many needs to be brought in? What areas really need improving and what will make Arsenal go one step up next year?
CHECK OUT THE RIGHT RESULT LEAGUE TABLE - It has certainly been an unhappy end to the season for Arsenal fans but you can take some comfort knowing you should have finished as comfortable runners up.
