Time for Arsenal fans to embrace the success of the season!

Football FanCast's reporter Freddie Myers cannot understand the wave of criticism at Arsene Wenger and feels that there are plenty of positives to be taken from this season.

I don't know who Arsene Wenger has upset in recent weeks but it's clear this was not a season he was meant to succeed. A series of poor decisions, injuries and just rotten bad luck has seen Arsenal's season capitulate in little over six weeks.

It was all a far cry when the Frenchman came out to us with the broadest of smiles as his young guns reached the 60pt mark in record time, even outpointing the ‘invincibles', and you can forgive him for having the wryest of smiles as he cited that 8 wins out of the remain 12 would have been enough to win, what must be seen as a remarkable Championship success.

There is no doubting that the match at St Andrews was to prove the turning point and the preceding game after that press conference. The injury to Eduardo, the fall out and the furore that surrounded his skipper's act of petulance, was the start of a culmination of events, which was to see the wheels of what seemed a smooth, well oiled wagon come off the rails.

It was certainly not foreseen that it was possible, some eight weeks ago, and you have only had to look at websites, forums and newspapers to realise that the steward's enquiry has already began with the finger of blame not pointing at misfortunes, but squarely at the feet of manager Arsene Wenger.

I find it extremely hard to fathom as to why Wenger is having the finger pointed at by disgruntled supporters. Was it his fault that the club decided to move to the Emirates and faced a constraint of funds in the last seasons? Can you blame the man for not being able to build on the ‘invicibles' success and as a result has had to take the club through a period of transition? Why isn't he being lauded for the remarkable achievements this season, with a side that cost next to nothing, and showed the fans what a strong foundation he has built that will have Arsenal challenging for the games top honours for years to come. It really puzzles me and every football neutral looking in. I wonder what those same supporters would say if Wenger said he had enough and was leaving at the end of the season; a great deal of stutters would prevail among those discontented fans, who will start to realise once again that they have the finest forward thinking coach probably in Europe.

Today's game was the perfect example of their luck in recent weeks. Once again the gunners were set to rue poor decisions, misfortune in hitting the woodwork and failing to get reward for their dominance on the pitch. This week has highlighted the fine line that exists within football between success and failure. Two games that they deserved to win were cruelly taken away from them and as a result see an end to this season's campaign that had promised so much.

I'm sure in this coming week, there will more inquests into where it wrong and Wenger will undoubtedly come under scrutiny with regards to transfer policy as he should have foreseen all those injuries and misfortunes that have plagued the last two months. I think some Arsenal fans need to take a bit of a step back and take the positives in what would have been an excellent season. They should also appreciate that they have one of the finest managers of his generation who would have a pick of the clubs should he decide to walk away.

It is important to remember that Sir Alex Ferguson only had one title success in five seasons up until last. It would have been very easy to write him off but Sir Alex in that time has built what he has considered his finest ever side. It takes time to build success and that is what Wenger is doing at Arsenal. Sometimes you have to take a step back before going forward and the team would have learnt some valuable lessons from this season as a result.

  • Should Wenger be taking some responsibility for Arsenal's euro exit?
  • Has this man's fitness cost Arsenal the Premier League title?
  • Champions League or bust in a season Arsenal must consider a success!
  • Is the Arsenal boss right to reinstate forward?
  • Is it time Arsenal fans showed a little perspective?

There are a lot of positives

There are a lot of positives to take out but there must be plenty of criticism laid at the door of Wenger as to why he persists in playing Eboue, Why against Liverpool he played Senderos instead of playing Toure and Gallas in the centre.

    i think bendtner was unlucky

i think bendtner was unlucky not to score on two occations....van der saar was fantastic to rescue united from two own goals....adebayor was as we all know, shitttt! he had so many obvious chances to score but gave feeble shots and no technique... wenger needs at least one cover for center back, both wings and a better striker. bendtner could partner that striker or be a sub...as for ade...i dont know where he is gona fit....his strongest value is he hardly gets injured. we need depth in the team to fight for titles and trophies! and i repeat that is what we the supporters need. arsenal is not a footballing school to nurture players from their teenage statues to superstardom while sacrificing honours. for me, the following players would be best used as Walcott (cover for the wings and strikers...supersub) Eboue (cover for Sagna, not Kolo!) Senderos (Carling Cup or small matches...not good enough for big games) Traoure (cover for clichy) Adebayor ( striking cover) Arsenal need to bring in skillful players like Ben Arfa, Modric, to give us more width and options so that they can drill through like Hleb when the going gets tough. And one cutting-edge striker like Benzema ( whether he and Arfa are not talking or not, they are still linking up in Lyon so dont tell me any more ballony!) For the big defender, Micah Richards is available (there is no unavailable player on the planet! every player has his price!) and would be extremely interested in joining Arsenal. This would push Gallas and Toure to their limits. I wonder how teams like Bayern, Man U, Chelsea, R Madrid are not afraid to sign players to their teams and AW is always tight-pursed? what are they using the money for? and damn! the current players wages are not even that high so there is money to spend! Mr Wenger, please no obscure signing...we are tired of being laughing stocks of our peers. even chelsea got something to say about league titles of late, and they go to CL semi finals like its a piece of cake! You have 69M pounds according to the board to spend. You could raise more money by selling some of the weak links in the club like Rafa did! its that simple, man! Otherwise, why dont you leave the club so that an 'obscure young' manager takes over and propels himself into stardom like your player policy! We could turn that into manager policy too you know! We are tired!

    I think Wenger has

I think Wenger has jeapodised our season with being stubborn in the transfer market. He has built a wondeful foundation like you say but he really put to much pressure on them to succeed when they may have needed a few more experienced heads around.

I think bad luck and poor

I think bad luck and poor refs has been the ultimate cause of a season that has ended in disappointed, i cant understand why Wenger is constantly criticised, it makes no sense to me. People have short memories.

its funny but how can these

its funny but how can these Arsenal players be considered inexperienced when all of them played in the CL final a few years back. Gallas and Toure are experinced and have not played too well. The problem i have seen is a lack of concentration - i mean no one moved on the free kick and Gallas was slow and gave away a penalty. All in all Was soooo dissapointing today, he was like a fake Henry, he gave away this match and a chance for the title. I love him as a player but is not consistent, composed and has poor feild awareness! great things next season though! God Bless!

spot on thomas - bad refs,

spot on thomas - bad refs, bad injury at birmingham has affected us and short memories of what the great manager has given our club, and we have surpassed what we probably all thought we would achieved, the problem is that because it was all going so well, we struggle to accept we are a little short. the boss may sign one.... bet he doesnt, at least three for me, he never will let people know what he is going to do... look at the age of our players, they will be a team for ten years, the others will grow old at other clubs... keep the faith you fans

    rid the team of hoyte,

rid the team of hoyte, senderos, lehmann, gilberto, song and eboue (if not play him at right back!!!) to raise some funds and go and get 3 players of high quality such as richards, lescott, ben arfa/ modric/ quaresma (my most preferable choice)and we will be back to winning the prem and perhaps a good run in the champs league. Although i must also say that from next season if we do not win something (and i hate to say this about a guy who is a legend) wenger should move upstairs to oversee youth development and give the job to someone like laudrup or rijkaard. But we will i have faith and so the proffessor will be going nowhere!!! This year hurts but that hurt will be transferred into experience and a greater will to win! P.s ade is world class so get off his back. He doesn't fit the 'beautiful' style but unlike henry who we all complained for years about he can head the god damn ball and is only 22!!! Look at drogba now, we have someone who is a diamond waiting to be polished so get behind the man youso called arsenal fans.

    No matter what has happened,

No matter what has happened, I do appreciate what Wenger has done. He is a genius and I cannot see anyone else taking his job ever though like he said that even if you are working for 150 years, you still make mistakes. I just hope that he has realised that and actually listens to people who have constantly criticised his thin and young squad. I hope he buys atleast 4 player (centreback who is tall and strong, a winger - hleb never shoots and eboue is crap, an excellent keeper - neither Almunia or Lehmann is good enuff and a good descent striker). Hail Arsenal.
