Football FanCast guest columnist Joe Baxter feels that Saturday's performance, once again, highlighted Arsenal's need of a Bergkamp esque figure within the squad that can unlock the most resolute of defences.

I bet my bottom dollar that I wasn't the only Arsenal fan who was privately seething on the long journey home on Saturday. As we meandered our way down the A1, trying to dissect our woeful display, Wenger came on the airwaves to discount Sunderland's negative tactics as the reason for the result. To say the air went blue in the car was an understatement - why can't he take responsibility for our apparent failings?

I was absolutely dismayed in all honesty - what was he expecting Sunderland to do; play us off the park? It is slowly becoming a recurring theme and the moment Wenger stop's hiding, and addresses his own tactical naivety, then maybe we can start looking like potential champions once again.

I look over the Arsenal squad at present and I see an array of talented footballers, but very few match winners within our ranks. We have Cesc, Van Persie, Nasri and when fit Rosicky, but other than that we are incredibly limited. We are crying out for a Dennis Bergkamp type player who is able to unlock resolute defences or the teams that come and park the bus. Such players are generally few and far between, but I can't help but feel the solution has been staring us in the face for some time.

When Wenger was covering Euro2008 the one player that he was constantly praising was Andrei Arshavin; as talented a No.10 that you can find in football who is desperate to take a chance in a Western League. It seemed like a perfect move all round and the very fact that Wenger was lauding him suggested that a move was on the cards; it didn't happen and it all left me somewhat bemused. I think Arshavin is the one player that would fit the club perfectly and would be an ideal complement for RVP or Adebayor and whether Wenger was baulking at the asking price or his apparent wage demands is unknown, but I really felt we missed the boat here.

Reports yesterday suggested that was a supposed January move to Tottenham has been dismissed and apparently the player is keen to move to a top four club. I firmly believe that the club shouldn't let this £16-18m gift horse pass them by again as he is just the type of player we are crying out for. Sunderland and Hull were the classic cases of what our squad is missing and it's time to open up the purse strings and take a chance on the Russian - he could well prove the difference between success and failure.

Would Arshavin be the perfect complement to Arsenal's squad?

He is a quality player and
He is a quality player and we certainly need someone who can provide something different to the proceedings, it just bolis down to money and I cannot see Wenger paying that for him.

Would love to see him at the
Would love to see him at the football club, it will be nice to have someone who isnt afraid to shoot and prepared to take defenders on upfront.

Like all good opportunites
Like all good opportunites we have passed up over the years it will simply boil down to the clubs failure to put their hand in their pocket and they will pass Arshavin up again.

How many times you seen him
How many times you seen him play? If he was any good he would have been signed a long time ago. How can you say he would compliment Ade or RvP? He would not even play up front for us for god sake! You have to be good enough to play in the first place. The last thing we need right now is a striker, what with Bendtner and Vela ready to take both striking positions within the next year, so why bother wasting the money on this no hoper?

Wenger deserves tonnes of
Wenger deserves tonnes of respect for what he has done at Arsenal He almost single handedly transformed the club but he has his faults. The man ain´t a god. And personally I think he´s chickenshit when it comes to signing players. Big money signings - Reyes, Jeffers, Wiltord.... Henry. His best players are usually cheapies and because he´s so concerned about the club´s finances I think he´s terrorfied to spend big money and to lose a [*@!$] load if the player doesn´t work out. Or even if the player does work out but he´s at the height of his career and the money won´t be re-couped. The board want wenger to spend but they give him complete control and he doesn´t want to spend. So... whatya gonna do? Get used to watching kids I guess until he feels like leaving.

And I am sure the reason we
And I am sure the reason we are at the bottom of the league and looking like a pile of shite is because we did not sign Arshavin... Oh, we arent at the bottom? You would think that some of these fans have not seen the bad days. These ARE the good years for goodness sake!

"addresses his own tactical
"addresses his own tactical naivety" !!!!! As opposed to what - your traffic jam inspired, post match genius that we need to buy a player when we have an off day. I know why we don't just buy two squads - one to play beautiful football at home (without "unlocking defences" of course) and another which is capable of dealing with "defences" when playing away from home. Nice work - 5 mins I won't get back!

Whilst i believe him to be
Whilst i believe him to be very talented i suspect that he wouldent be tough enough for the premiership , remember Jose Antonio Reyes , exposure to the numpty Nevilles in his first game against Man U knocked the stuffing out of him , it was noticable in the tough Euro games that Arshavin disapeared and i think that may have influenced Arsene Wengers decision not to buy.I personaly would have preferred him to take the 30 mil for Adebeyer and bought Torsten Frings and Lucas Padolski.

I agree with Tom Come on
I agree with Tom Come on lads.......are you actually real fans?? Arshavin? ......to even put this lad in the same catagory as Denis is first of all wrong,.....the lad is a nothing player,no fitness and always injured..we've enough of that in the squad already, certainly not good enough for The Arsenal! I'll admit i'm getting a little worried about or inconsistant preformances but there are no easy games in the Prem theses days. I'm sure le boss will do what needs to be done in Jan, until then we can only support the players we got!

I am sorry - We don't need
I am sorry - We don't need ASH..I remember the old saying..You have to earn the right to play..and then our skill will overcome..We have forgot how to earn the right to play our football. We already have a team of technical gifted players..We have full backs that tackle, push forward and attack. Our combined strength in midfield is amazing. There fluent football, pace, passing and assist is quite unbelievable. The forward combination of RVP ad ADEBAY..is frightening. What we lack is the right to play our football. This comes only from the centre of the park. From centre backS or central midfields. We have CESC..who is and will be always a BARCELONA Boy..Arsenal are only grooming him for the day..But to extend his time he needs a partner that he can work with..We also need a CENTRE back who committs to " THEY WILL NOT PASS". Toure/Gallas is not the answer. Choose ONE..If we had a TONY ADAMS/MARTIN KEOWN and Patrick Viera. I love our football, if I supported Barcelona, my second team would be ARSENAL. But we need TRUE CAPTAINS on the field. We still need to win ugly..We can not do that..
