Baxter feels that Saturday's
performance, once again, highlighted Arsenal's need of a Bergkamp esque figure within
the squad that can unlock the most resolute of defences.
I bet my bottom dollar that I wasn't the only
Arsenal fan who was privately seething on the long journey home on Saturday. As
we meandered our way down the A1, trying to dissect our woeful display, Wenger
came on the airwaves to discount Sunderland's negative tactics as the reason
for the result. To say the air went blue in the car was an understatement - why
can't he take responsibility for our apparent failings?
I was absolutely dismayed in all honesty - what was
he expecting Sunderland to do; play us off the park? It is slowly becoming a
recurring theme and the moment Wenger stop's hiding, and addresses his own
tactical naivety, then maybe we can start looking like potential champions once
again.
I look over the Arsenal squad at present and I see an array of talented footballers, but very few match winners within our ranks. We have Cesc, Van Persie, Nasri and when fit Rosicky, but other than that we are incredibly limited. We are crying out for a Dennis Bergkamp type player who is able to unlock resolute defences or the teams that come and park the bus. Such players are generally few and far between, but I can't help but feel the solution has been staring us in the face for some time.
When Wenger was covering Euro2008 the one player that he was constantly praising was Andrei Arshavin; as talented a No.10 that you can find in football who is desperate to take a chance in a Western League. It seemed like a perfect move all round and the very fact that Wenger was lauding him suggested that a move was on the cards; it didn't happen and it all left me somewhat bemused. I think Arshavin is the one player that would fit the club perfectly and would be an ideal complement for RVP or Adebayor and whether Wenger was baulking at the asking price or his apparent wage demands is unknown, but I really felt we missed the boat here.
Reports yesterday suggested that was a supposed January move to Tottenham has been dismissed and apparently the player is keen to move to a top four club. I firmly believe that the club shouldn't let this £16-18m gift horse pass them by again as he is just the type of player we are crying out for. Sunderland and Hull were the classic cases of what our squad is missing and it's time to open up the purse strings and take a chance on the Russian - he could well prove the difference between success and failure.
Would Arshavin be the perfect complement to Arsenal's squad?
