Championship PodJockey Chris Ray is delighted to see the FA Cup has recovered some of its lost magic and cannot remember a time where so many non Premiership clubs find themselves in the hat for the 6th round draw.
This season's FA Cup has brought with it the traditional thrills, spills and shocks that have long been associated with one of the most prestigious tournaments in World football - none more so than at Anfield yesterday.
My traditional ritual (if not at a match!) of watching Jeff, Kammy and the lads on Soccer Saturday gave me a toe curdling 4-0 Gillingham defeat at Northampton, but the comedy moment of Matt Le Tissier going absolutely insane as Brian Howard blasted in the winner for ‘The Tykes' in stoppage time.
I would suggest that anyone who tells you they predicted a Barnsley win is either an eternal optimist, or a liar! Liverpool fans, as always, will complain to the high heavens toward the powers that be on the red half of Merseyside, but no-one can deny Barnsley the glory of what must be one of the finest results in the club's history.
For me, the cup this season has been nothing short of excellent, with the likes of Havant & Waterlooville and Chasetown also making their mark against league opposition, while I can't remember a time when so may non-Premier League clubs still had an interest in the competition.
Cardiff's win over Wolves was capped by an absolutely stunning goal from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, which was worthy of winning any game, while West Brom recovered from a recent dip in league form to decimate managerless Coventry at the Ricoh Arena.
As I write, Sheffield United are becoming the fourth Championship side through to the next round, although they will have to negotiate a replay at the Riverside under new manager Kevin Blackwell, and Preston, undergoing a min-revival under Alan Irvine, are also looking to upset the odds against Portsmouth, what odds a David Nugent goal?
The only disappointment from a Championship point of view is the exit of Southampton, who were deservedly beaten by Bristol Rovers of League One, you can hear the thoughts of Matt, Jon and Poulton on this week's Southampton FanCast.
The cup draw is made tomorrow afternoon, with at least three Championship clubs dreaming of Wembley. Que Sera Sera!
