Football FanCast
columnist Andy Davies looks ahead to the weekend dramatic playoff
shootout and wonders which two teams out of five can claim the last available
spots.
There is just one game left to play in what has been one of
the most exciting and unpredictable seasons in the Championship for many years
and there is still the matter of who is going to secure the last two playoff
places. Hull and Bristol City have already ensured a top six finish but unbelievably
we go into the last weekend of the season and there are five teams that are
still in the hunt for finishing in the play offs, but who will it be?
Watford currently occupy 5th spot and are 2pts
clear of 7th place Wolves but they have only won one game in 13 matches and
there is no guarantee they will retain their place. Since Marlon King departed
in January for £5 million and they have struggled for goals ever since. Aidy
Boothroyd has defended the decision to sell their star striking saying the
offer was ‘too good to turn down'. I
don't know how many fans would agree with him on that one as £5 million is
small change to the money they would have received from promotion. In the early
months of the season, the Hornets were riding high at the top of the league,
but now they will be lucky if they finish 6th. On current form would you back
Watford to win the playoffs?
Things could not be more different for Crystal Palace who lie in 6th place and have only lost four times since November. Neil Warnock has turned the team around and full credit to him. When he took over they looked like relegation contenders but they could now being playing in the Premiership next season. It is often said, the team who finishes in 6th usually win the play offs and this could certainly be the case here.
Wolves have been impressive form of late and only lost once in the last 8 games and that was against their great rivals West Brom. You could forgive Mick McCarthy for feeling optimistic, especially with the recent form of Andy Keogh and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake; as formidable an attack as you are likely to see and the latter will certainly need to put one over his old club if they have any chance of succeeding.
Ipswich faces the toughest test of the weekend as they entertain Hull City. The tractor boys have a wonderful home record, only losing one game all season and Phil Brown will know his team is up for the tough affair. It will be interesting to see how Hull City set out their stall. Mathematically they still have a chance of automatic promotion but realistically it's unachievable and with the playoffs it is all about positioning as to who will play the easier semi final. Brown will go all out to capture 3rd place.
Finally, there is Sheffield United who has taken a while to accustom themselves to being back in the Championship. After Bryan Robson failed to take over from Neil Warnock and with the club languishing in mid-table, the board appointed Kevin Blackwell as his replacement and the team are flying. They have won four of the last five games and Blackwell has made a great claim to keep the job permanently. Has this good run come too late? To sneak into the play offs they have beat Southampton away, who are fighting for their Championship lives. For the Blades to succeed they have to hope that Ipswich, Wolves, Palace or Watford slip-up. It's a tall order but as we have seen, anything is possible in this League.
