Chelsea PodJockey David Chidgley looks back at an
excellent week for Avram Grant's men and invites you all to tune in for more
fun and frolics on the latest Chelsea FanCast.
Who could have
genuinely believed, after the "Special One" departure in September and
subsequent highs and lows under Avram Grant, that we'd be going in to the last
match of the season, level on points with Man Utd, and possibly 90mins away
from winning back our title! Our 2-0 win has ensured that Sky will have their
big weekend title extravaganza on Sunday as we entertain Bolton at the Bridge
while United face a tougher task at the JJB.
Although it
would seem we have a slightly easier task, we have to accept that the title is
not in our hands and should United win then barring an unlikely heavy win in
the region of around 18-0, we will have to settle as runners up. But you have
to be in it to win it, as they say, and we have pulled out some excellent
results and performances to ensure it will go down to the wire.
Monday was certainly no exception as we produced a steely and professional performance at St James Park. This has been a bit of a bogey fixture for the Chels over the last few years, and was in fact our first victory over the Geordies since 2002. It was a timely turn of fortunes and for Fergie, who harboured doubts that we could pull it off has certainly been made to eat his words - all washed down with a choice bottle of claret no doubt.
The first half was rather lacklustre - possibly a bit of a hangover from the herculean performance against Liverpool last Wednesday - and my bum was beginning to squeak much to the annoyance of the regulars in my lucky Chelsea bar - Putney Station - still never seen Chelsea lose when watching it there!!
Half time saw some postitive tactical changes - clearly by Avram Grant - our new tactical genius? We go 4-4-2 with Anelka and Drogba up front - not before time, and it did the trick as we upped the pace and kept hold of the ball in a full on assault and battery on the Newcastle penalty area. A goal was inevitable and who was to pop up, but probably our best player over the last few weeks to calm the nerves.
Michael Ballack has scored in the last 3 Premiership games and is really looking like the class player we knew he always was, who can grab hold of and influence a game like the truly great players do. Let's hope he can continue his form for the last two games of the season at Bolton on Saturday and of course the Champions League final. Diddling United out of both games would really be very sweet and remember our German midfielder has fond memories of getting one over Fergie's men, having scored the goal to knock them out of a Champions League semi-final stage, when playing for Bayer Leverkusen - let's hope the final we will see him deliver once more.
Talking of Utd, in a slight departure from previous Chelsea Podcasts, our latest effort has an old mate of mine - Dan Riley, a Man Utd fan, as a guest. I think it will make podcasts slightly more interesting by throwing a different perspective into the mix, and I hope Dan will be the first of several non-Chelsea mates including ex players, writers, TV people and journalists to come and join in the banter.
Dan has produced some excellent football programmes including The Premiership Years, Greatest goals for and against United and the Real Football Factories - so, apart from being a United fan, he knows his onions. He also made the trip to see Utd win the European Cup in the Nou Camp in 1999 - so he knows what it's all about to make the effort to get there.
Moscow and how to get there, is still the issue dominating most Chelsea fans minds, and whilst it is a relief to see that Russia have announced that they will waive the Visas for ticket holders for 72 hours, it's a shame that most loyal fans will be priced out of it. One of my Chelsea guests, Martin, is in this boat, whilst Stuart, my other Chelsea guest may well be making the trip to Moscow by boat - via Dover, Hamburg and Helsinki. Not only the cheapest way we've found to get there, but potentially the most fun packed.
All will be revealed in the latest Chelsea Podcast together with our thoughts on the Chelsea v Liverpool game last week and the title decider next weekend. Oh yes, and we've also got our favourite chants from the week which inevitably means more terrible singing by me and my guests - sorry. Tune in if you dare!!!
