Symonds is in no doubt
who he feels are Manchester United's main rivals for the Premier League title.
You can forgive Martin O'Neill for revealing that he
woke up feeling optimistic Sunday morning. I think most Villa fans, heartened
by our early season form, felt we could go to Stamford Bridge and get something
from the game. It didn't happen and that has to go down as the biggest 2-0
thrashing I have ever had the displeasure of witnessing.
Make no bones about it we were totally outclassed;
in every area of the pitch and I thank the lord this that in this game we didn't
get hit for six or seven. It wasn't that we were bad, but we just couldn't get
the ball off them.
I don't know what Phil Scolari has done to this football club, but boy he has found the magic touch. I always looked upon Chelsea as a dour efficient outfit, dare I say an Arsenal of old, but he has brought some buoyancy and flair to the proceedings. The intricate football is superb; straight out of the Wenger manual, but unlike their North London rivals, Chelsea still possess that ruthless streak in and around the goal. I think Villa fans can back me up here when I say that is the finest display I have seen against us in some time and was the kind of reality check I think we all have needed. If that is what it takes to challenge for a title, then we are simply light years away.
Watching Chelsea play yesterday, only leads me to believe that the title race is merely between them and Manchester United. Liverpool looked extremely ordinary when they played us at Villa Park and Arsenal - who I personally had high hopes for this season, are seemingly missing that extra something, when games are tight. A Manchester United or Chelsea wouldn't lose to a Hull City or draw with the likes of Stoke or Sunderland and that is why over the course of the season that it is going to be a straight fight between Scolari and Ferguson teams for top spot - after yesterday's performance, I know where the smart money should be going.
