columnist Rob Facey wonders whether Michael Owen has played his
last game for England after being left out of the latest World Cup squad.
Fabio Capello has announced the England squad for the World Cup qualifying
matches against Kazakhstan and Belarus but has omitted Newcastle striker
Michael Owen.
The
striker, who has scored three in his last four games at St James' Park, would
have been banking on a recall after being left out of previous Capello squads.
However, after this latest blow it must be asked whether Michael Owen played his last game in an England shirt?
Surely if there is room for David Beckham then there can be a spot for Owen? Will the Newcastle striker need to move clubs if he wants to regain his spot in the national set up?
Regardless of what team he is at, it is important to think of the reasons why Capello has left him out. What exactly does Owen offer the team in 2008?
Walcott has the pace that made him famous when he burst onto the scene a decade ago at France 98 and goals from a frontman has never been part of England's game since the retirement of Alan Shearer.
England get a lot of goals from midfield and by playing the likes of Emile Heskey and Peter Crouch, recalled to the squad, as a lone striker, it is clear that they are not poachers, more target men to get others into the game.
Rooney is slowly rediscovering his form but the truth is that England no longer have the natural goal scorers that we once had in abundance.
Does this mean that Owen should be a certainty, or should we be trying to develop a different style, harnessing the attacking skills of Gerrard, Cole and Walcott; none of whom are out-and-out strikers but they are all capable of scoring.
In a similar vein Shawn Wright-Phillips has been recalled to the squad, he is another that can get goals if he is given games.
Would Owen be in your England side and will he ever wear the Three Lions again while Capello is in charge?
