Football FanCast columnist and Everton fan Debbie Smaje is relishing the biggest Merseyside derby since 89 and for the first time in her lifetime, Liverpool hold no fear.
So it's finally here. After weeks and months of anticipation and build up, the biggest Merseyside Derby since the 1989 FA Cup Final is here. And for the first time in my life watching Everton, I'm not scared of them.
For the last 15 years or so, we've been mostly in decline. Relegation battles, the Dogs of War, we have been a team that is no threat to Liverpool, but could usually raise ourselves for two Derby games a season. Under Moyes, we are a different proposition. This season, I finally believe we have improved so much, we belong in that same mini league that they do. Not title challengers, but Champions League place and trophy challengers. Whether we win or lose tomorrow, it doesn't disguise the fact that we are now a team who can match Liverpool over 38 games, not just two head to heads.
It's an unfamiliar feeling for my generation, as for so long, Liverpool have simply been better than us. Now I believe we can go into a game at Anfield with no fear whatsoever. Even without Cahill, we have Yakubu and Johnson, and a very talented midfield to provide for them, in Arteta, Osman and Pienaar.
How does the saying go? We have nothing to fear, but fear itself. Fear and belief is the key for us tomorrow. If we believe in ourselves, and approach the game with our best team in mind, I know we're good enough to beat them. However, if we approach this game with negativity, for example, Neville and Carsley in the same centre midfield, and fear of what Liverpool can do to us, we won't even trouble them. We are good enough, and Moyes must make the players realise that.
