Football FanCast columnist Rob Facey agrees with Phil Neville's calls that Everton need to
spend big but wonders if the Merseysiders are too far behind the Big Four to
realistically break the norm.
Everton captain Phil Neville has insisted
that the club spend big this summer in order to cement their position as the
Premier League's club most likely to break into the Big Four.
Neville, who helped the club claim the UEFA
Cup spot this season, has worries that if they do not start challenging with
Europe's elite, fifth in the Premier League may be the best the club can hope
for.
"Now we have to be competing for players with the clubs above us," Neville told The Independent.
"To catch them we have to be looking at the same players they are. If not, fifth will be the maximum we can expect.
"In the big games, especially against the top four, maybe we have missed that special player a little bit, and that's what we need to find this summer.
"We have to press on and in footballing terms it would be a major disaster if we didn't push on and keep progressing as a club. We have to bring in the right players, better players than we have already, and there's not too many out there."
Neville will be worried after seeing Spurs already move in the transfer market and Newcastle and Blackburn are expected to spend big this summer with a view to challenge next season.
If Villa, who pushed Everton for the UEFA Cup spot do sell Gareth Barry, then the club will have a great say in the transfer market as the England midfielder is expected to go for more than £10m.
Is Neville right to be worried? Would Europe's finest want to move to Goodison Park? Has Moyes turned the club into that attractive a product? Who is likely to push them for the fifth spot next year, or are the Toffees ready to break into the Big Four?
