Football FanCast columnist Joe Jennings has reservations about the abilities of Victor Anichebe and feels that it is time to accept he won't make the grade.

Young players can be infuriating at times, then on occasions, dazzling. Victor Anichebe has provided Evertonians with plenty to saviour and relish over the past few years, particularly important goals in the UEFA Cup. However, it has become blatantly observable, in my opinion that the Nigerian is not up to the task.

I've harboured this thought for a while now and yesterday has verified my assumption. To some, Anichebe "works hard" possesses "brute strength" and can, from time to time, be a "threat from the bench", but sadly the Toffees' number twenty-eight is not good enough for where we want to be, the top.

His touch is absolutely atrocious, finishing pitiful and his overall game lacking. Anichebe distinctly lacks the core attributes needed to be a top Premier League player, let alone an average one.

Others may find this harsh but one Premier League goal all season is shockingly bad, even if starting appearances have proved infrequent. Admittedly, he has proved a threat against the lesser sides in the UEFA Cup and his goals were vital but he's simply not up to it.

His first touch is possibly even worse than Johnson's, and his awareness is awful. His fitness has proved abysmal, for a boy of 19, I find it embarrassing.

"He needs time" appears to be the well worn response. Why, because he is the "local lad"? Well how long do you give him? Six months - a year - eighteen months? We simply can't afford to keep blooding him to "give him time"; we need to get some real quality in, and immediately at that.

Loaning him to a Championship side, where he'd start for regularly next season will only mask the key issue, Victor Anichebe will simply never reach the standard Everton Football Club demand and require.

Brand me harsh, but at times he has proved lazy. He is lethargic and without an evident scathing attack, he doesn't look all that interested to me. I want players who are going to die for the cause, have pride in the Royal Blue shirt we care so deeply about.

I think, and have done for a while, that he's a poor player. Moyes, evidently, needs to look at bringing in at least two forwards in the close season, mainly as we desperately need someone to place pressure on Yakubu, but also because you don't know what you're going to get from Vaughan in terms of fitness. It would be atrocious if, come next season, we only have Anichebe as one of the only two forwards fit in the squad.

I can only thank Anichebe for the happier times he has provided me with, his goal and overall performance against Nuremberg, in particular. But I want Everton to be ruthless, we have finished 5th on merit, but it is an imperative that we improve, show ambition. The sooner we awaken to the reality that the "local lad strong striker" isn't good enough, the better because this is as good as it gets for Victor Anichebe.

I think we should give a chance. We always write young players of too early and so the kid should be given a chance. He is learning alongside the master in Yak and Im sure it will pay off in time.

I think these comments are unfounded. Anyone who thinks he's not up to it is talking rubbish, utter rubbish. He's just 19 and will be a great player, mark my words.

The problem is that everyone
The problem is that everyone hyped him up to the max and he is probably believing in it. I would send him out on loan personally to get his form back. I have full faith in Moyes and if he he thinks he will make the grade then that is fine by me.

Whilst I agree we have to be
Whilst I agree we have to be ruthless, I think there are far more pressing issues at the club than Victor Anichebe. He is only 19 and if needs be we can loan him out for a couple of seasons. By that time he'll be 21 and if he gets regular playing time at a lower level club I believe his maturity amongst other things, will drastically improve. Ruthlessness needs to start at the top and as good a professional and despite how committed he is to the cause, our current club captain, Mr Phillip Neville, is not at the standard to play regularly in a top 5 club. Yes, he is a decent right back, but when you look at the choice of right backs at the club, I think, there is a problem that needs to be addressed during the summer. Lee Carsley is another who, despite a solid season, has looked ropey in a fair few games this season. Plus, he is 34 now and he's certainly no Claude Makelele so I feel now is the right time for him to move on. Out of contract and free to move on. He should go and join his mate Stubbsy at Derby. Another top quality striker is required and another creative midfielder. If you look at the last couple of months of the season when we were without the likes of Cahill, Arteta and Osman, we were completely out of ideas and never looked like scoring. I have faith though. At the end of last season (06 - 07), I begged (in my head!) Moyes to sign Baines and Yakubu and he duly delivered so I'm sending out positive waves again, this time with the name Arshavin wrote in huge capital letters!!

he is a good squad player
he is a good squad player and always cause probs when comin off the bench late in the game. He wont be starter but we need him for numbers and he is cheap as chips at the moment wage-wise. He is as good as macus bent who is on 20 odd grand a week, where vic prob on 2 ish I think a right back, holding mid and a left wing will make us solid next yr. Maybe another creative mid as well. But i welcome any quality for all positions!!

I agree to an extent but as you said yourself he can be threat coming off the bench and we are supposed to be strengthening the squad not making it smaller. As someone else mentioned we have far more pressing matters. We dont have a midfielder at the club -with the exception of Fernandes who will probably be leaving- who can pass, cross or create anything. Perhaps even more alarming is the fact that if Carsley goes we wont even have a midfielder who can tackle!

personally, i think its
personally, i think its ridiculous to write off a 19 year old. i agree that some of his attributes are not up to scratch at the moment, however, he has enough time on his side to improve. david weir and ian wright for example, were fairly late developers in the game and the both went on to be established quality players. plus, i would rather give a youngster the time to prove himself rather than a £6 million flop. also james vaughn, to me, has not shown anything more than victor anichebe but we are willing to give him time. to say, 'this is as good as it gets for Victor Anichebe,' is pathetic. he has more than enough time to become a great player. one thing i do agree with though is to possibly loan him out to a championship side, were he could play more often than not, this will only help his fitness and hopefully his confidence.

Firstly he is not a Nigerian! Victor is only 19, he has plenty of time to develop, if you want to question anyones ability start with Hibbo! He is crap, can't put it any better than that. Why does DM play Neville in midfield? Christ he is Sh**e in that position yet a decent right back. We need a midfield leader, a go getter and driver! Step up Mr Sidwell please.
