Football FanCast columnist Clive Horton believes that Everton should give Spurs defender Pascal Chimbonda a
wide berth.
One thing that I have always respected about David Moyes is that he is your
no nonsense football manager who is not afraid to put players in their place,
despite their reputations. I remember him giving Jesper Blomquist a severe
dressing down on the touchline after bemoaning his substitution in one of his
first games in charge; it is a trait that has carried on throughout his
stewardship and has damaged many an ego - just ask Andy van der Meyde.
To be honest the aforementioned was probably the only bad egg that Moyes has
brought in since he took the reins. The Scot is normally scrupulous when it
comes to identifying his transfer targets, as he wants to bring in players that
won't disrupt the harmony of the group and who will maintain the 100% work
ethic that he and the Goodison faithful demand. It is a blueprint that should
remain intact and that is why I would seriously oppose a move for Pascal
Chimbonda.
There is something that grates me about the guy and is the epitome of the modern footballer who sees the Pound sign as king and very little else. The ruthless way in which he handed in a transfer request on the final day of the season at Wigan, the way in which he reacted to being substituted in the Carling Cup final are clear examples of a player who only thinks of No.1 instead of his teammates. We certainly shouldn't entertain someone with that attitude, despite his undoubted abilities as a footballer.
I don't know what my fellow Evertonians think about the guy and maybe some feel his abilities outweigh any such misdemeanours. There is no question we need a right back ahead of the new season, but should we focus attentions elsewhere or would you prefer to see us take a chance on the player.
