Football FanCast columnist Jerome Johnstone is unsure as to why Liverpool are pursuing a move for Gareth Barry and wonders if Rafa is looking to possibly reverting back to a possible 4-4-2.

There doesn't seem to be a day that doesn't go by where Gareth Barry's Aston Villa future is not up for debate. What started as a general enquiry by Rafa Benitez has opened up a huge can of worms, in which every man and his dog at Villa Park bemoaning the conduct of our football club.

It has become an absolute farce and the mudslinging really hasn't done much for both football clubs but I have been fascinated that the centre of this furore, Gareth Barry, has been incredibly quiet and therefore done little but add fuel to the flames. It seems to me that the Aston Villa skipper has had his head turned and would clearly quite fancy a move away but I ask the question - Is he really the kind of player Liverpool need?

I have always rated Gareth Barry as a footballer. He is tenacious, excellent left foot but is he really any better than what we got? It probably doesn't help my impartiality that I am a massive fan of Xabi Alonso, but I fail to see how Barry offers anything to our squad, which to be fair is pretty strong in centre midfield. Wingers are what our football club is short off and a suitable understudy for Fernando Torres. So what is Rafa's thinking behind the possible transfer- a possible change in formation?

Rafa Benitez has had his fair share of his critics over the last few years and I will admit that I was one of them. I was fed up of the constant chopping and changing of personnel, formations and failed to see how we could ever hope to get consistency. The 4-4-1-1 has proved a huge success in getting the best out of Gerrard/Torres and for me it would be the perfect one to mount a title challenge next season. I just wonder given a look at our targets whether the Spaniard is looking to revert to a 4-4-2 and bring Barry in on the left hand side.

If I am honest my priority should be a pair of attacking wingers to take the place of Babel and Kuyt. I know Babel has done particularly well down that left side but I feel a more natural winger like a Martin Petrov or a Ricardo Quaresma would be the perfect complement to what is already an extremely strong squad. What is Rafa's thinking behind the move for Gareth Barry? Would he be a signing that would be welcomed although at the possible expense of Alonso? Is Rafa looking to revert back to a 4-4-2 next season?

I have never rated Barry to
I have never rated Barry to be honest and cant see why we should try and sign him. You are dead right about wingers and for me they must be priority.

If he is adopting a 4-4-2
If he is adopting a 4-4-2 then I believe it will be a fatal error of judgment. The current system works perfectly and we shouldnt try and change it.

The signing is a mystery to me and i certainly wouldnt want to see him come in at the expense of Alonso.

Barry is a good player but
Barry is a good player but basically Rafa wants more players for his two holding roles so far we have in (no particular order of preference) Lucas-Masch-Alonso and possibly Gerarrd-Plessis, although the latter has only figured once all season, that against Arsenal... Would like Rafa to sign a younger center mid like Johnson from Man City, but my preference like the most fans I have talked to are wingers... Good wingers too..

The only advantage to Barry
The only advantage to Barry is that he is English, and if FIFA get their way, that may become a very important reason to buy British...

Precisely the opposite is
Precisely the opposite is the case: We need Barry precisely because of the 4-2-3-1 formation, which requires two defencive midfielders and we only have three players for those two positions (Masch, Alonso, Lucas, and not counting Plessis, who is too young and unproven). Adding a fourth option becomes even more of a priority because Masch will miss the beginning of the season due to the Olympics, and Alonso will be tired from the EM. Besides, Barry can fill in at LB if needed, where he is a safer option than Riise.

Rumour is that Xabi Alonso's girlfriend does not want to raise their child in this country, so Rafa has told him he can go back if a replacement is signed. Also at the end of the day it could all be a smokescreen as Liverpool chase another player.

Amen. Barry's an obvious
Amen. Barry's an obvious choice really. Can play anywhere down the left and also central defensive spot to either cover or supplement Monster Masch. Or would you rather have Riise? Can't understand the apprehension against this guy. Dead ball specialist, good delivery, good passing ability, works well with Stevie G and a versatile left footer. In a straight race between him and Seydou Keita I would go for Keita but Barry would make a very useful acquisition. Arshavin (yeah I'm late), a quality goal scoring winger and another striker (Torres WILL get injured someday) are more necessary though in my opinion.

Eh? Your a Liverpool fan yet
Eh? Your a Liverpool fan yet think we've been playing 4411? Hugely misguided there then. 4231 with Alonso or Lucas alongside Mascherano holding midfield. And why would signing Barry mean we're going to 442? 442 still requires two central midfielders and if we we're changing to 442 it would reduce a spot for Barry in the middle as Gerrard would back alongside Mascherano. You have got it completely wrong.

I have followed Barry since
I have followed Barry since his day as a highly rated youngster at Villa. His form dipped a few years but he is now back to his best under O'Neill. I can't see the connection between acquiring Barry and playing 4-2-2. I would say that Liverpool's current formation is more a 4-3-3 attacking and 4-5-1 when defending. This formation requires 3 central midfielders. Barry can fill the positions on the left (Babel's and sometimes Riise), on the central midfield and left back. The same applies to a 4-4-2 formation. Foremost, he is a good utily player and can do well on all these positions. With the lack of resources at hand, Liverpool will probably have to settle for a smaller squad, and Barry can do an excellent job as a squad / rotation player for all 3 positions. Go get him!!!
