Liverpool PodJockey Lawrie Brand reflects on last night's draw at Anfield and feels that Pepe Reina is
just as culpable as Riise for the late equaliser.
Due to unforeseen circumstance there will be no Podcast this
week. So having just witnessed the ‘enthralling' Champions League Semi Final I
felt the need to express my views.
Every time we meet Chelsea there's so much hype around the
game as if it's going to be this massive spectacle. Which surprises me because
there have only been three goals in the six previous Champions League meetings.
Having started off the slower of the two, we stepped it up a gear once Alonso found his passing range, which at times was quite brilliant. Chelsea were simply off the pace throughout and had to thank Petr Cech for keeping them in the tie. I thought Dirk Kuyt was outstanding yesterday and produced another high energy performance and was rewarded yet again with an opportunist effort. He really is the big game player the Dutchman and always delivers.
The second half was much like the first with Pepe Reina indulging in the odd fag break by the Kop as he was rarely threatened by Drogba and alike. Cech again pulled out another superlative to deny Stevie G, a goal, which in my opinion would have killed off the tie. I think it is fair to say that Torres in particular was getting a rough time of it out there. If it wasn't John Terry's elbow, it was casually his knee that was in his rib cage as Chelsea looked to kick El Nino off the park. Is it any wonder why Capello doesn't want this man as England Captain?
The game should have been put to bed and where the extra injury time minutes come from I will never know. It was a real Jammy dodger of an equaliser that came out of nowhere and why Liverpool fans are quick to point the finger at Riise' moment of madness, I feel that Reina should take the blame for not taking the cross. I know he doesn't look confident coming off his lane but I think I have a case.
Overall the game had few chances and at times, both sides looked like they were playing on egg shells not boots. It was as I expected overall, typical Liverpool v Chelsea, never quite reaching the heights of the talent on show. Am I happy with the result? Well of course I'd have preferred not to have conceded the late equaliser, but I'm very confident that we can finally exorcise our recent ghosts at Stamford Bridge and deliver the goods.
