Football FanCast columnist Jerome Johnstone feels that it is time to scrap the Stanley Park proposal once and for all and that the millions would be more effective elsewhere.

Am I the only Liverpool fan who is growing extremely frustrated at the proposed Stanley Park stadium? What was once perceived as a supporters dream is slowly becoming a total nightmare and in all honestly is seemingly crippling us beyond belief.

I was once told never to spend anything I haven't got and I feel the same must be said here at Liverpool. Borrowing in excess of £400m in the current climate is ludicrous enough, but given that it is likely to cause considerably financial constraints for Rafa Benitez in the coming season's is complete footballing suicide.

After many years of hurt and frustration, Liverpool finally looks to have a squad capable of mounting a successful title challenge. With a wonderful mix of youth and experience, there is no doubting that a strong foundation is in place but this continually needs to be approved upon if the club is going to sustain a long period of success. Another summer like the last one is not productive or helpful to any manager and having to wheel and deal, or looking for bargains cannot be the way forward, but you sense that Rafa is going to be left with little option.

If Liverpool ever needed proof of the dangers of taking on a debt then they should look no further than Arsenal. Since the North Londoners move to the Emirates, money has been extremely tight and Wenger has had to make do with hunting down youngsters or bargains. The Frenchman himself came out in pre-season and claimed that unfortunately it will take the club some 20yrs to be free of the debt and that is why subsequently the club will remain prudent. Arsenal's super new stadium generates huge revenues, but after three years, where has it taken them? They have won nothing for four seasons and is it any coincidence that success dried up, when constraints were in place? That ‘invincible' team in 2004 should have set upon a huge period of success, but were thwarted due to stadium costs and ended up with the subsequent break-up of that team.

So can we honestly risk a similar scenario at Anfield? That was a team who went the whole season unbeaten that went into dramatic decline, while we are in a position where we just want to mount a title challenge. I honestly believe it to be a risk that the football club shouldn't take and all our funds should be behind Rafa and making sure we consolidate and improve our already excellent squad. A title challenge and subsequent success has been a long time coming and we surely cannot afford to jeopardise this for the sake of a few extra bums on seats. Arsenal are proof that extra revenues count for little in terms of success and therefore I believe it is time to scrap the proposals and put all their backing behind Rafa. A plush new stadium is one thing, but a subsequent mid-table side playing in it could prove quite another and that is a risk that we could be taking if we let our best chance of sustaining a period of success pass us by.

I think there are good
I think there are good arguments for both sides but for me the team has to take priority everytime. If we could build the stadium without interfereing with spending on the team then fine but we cant and that is a problem.

Yep dont need a new stadium
Yep dont need a new stadium especially atthe cost of this team. Rafa needs all the funds possible to make this team champions and I would rather see that happen some new stadium.

You advocate not spending
You advocate not spending what you don't have. How will you buy players then. All signings so far are done on finance in the fact that the owners have not put a penny forward. Just bundle it up into further refinacing package. There is unfortunate only one way to increase revenue for future signings and that is mor emoney through the gate and into corporate boxes. Also with the present economic climate Banks won't be lending any more than they have loaned out so far. That will mean the debt will have to start being repaid instead of rolling it up into the next deal. Less money for players straight away.

I understand what you are
I understand what you are saying but cannot agree. It is incredibly short sighted to just cancel the plans to build a new stadium and instead invest the money in the team. For me, the problem is that we ARE borrowing to build the stadium, and the when we have another option, in the Dubai group, who could probably afford two new stadiums and then some. We simply sold the club to the wrong person..... and this is where the responsibility ends, with the decision makers who chose their own reward over the clubs stability. I often see comments from people claiming they have been on a waiting list for 12 years or more for a season ticket. I don't know how big the waiting list is but I'm sure Liverpool could easily sell an extra 20,000+ seats to home games. With an average of say 30 games at home each season and at say £30 per ticket, thats about £18m each year that we are losing by turning away fans due to our capacity restrictions. Add to that any money those 20,000 spend inside the stadium on programs, drinks, food, merchandise etc.... that's a lot of money. Then you have extra sponsorship in a bigger ground. We could probably be making close to £25m a year more with an extra 20,000 capacity. And lets not forget the club is planning to ultimately have 30,000 more inside the ground. So if we HAVE to borrow to finance this, the club will still turn a profit, albeit a small one. But the problem is, you look at this as what's best for tomorrow, when really, I want to be supporting a great club for the next 50 years or more. And for all the Liverpool fans of the future. The debt will be paid in 20 years and then we are turning in maybe £30m + each year more. At the moment, financially, we cannot compete. Unless we act now to address this, we will never be able to compete. I think the work Benitez is doing is nothing short of miraculous when you compare the funds that Man U and Chelsea have. But there is only so long you can expect superior management by benitez to better superior spending by Chelsea and Man U. And one day, 20 years from now, Benitez (probably) won't be here. And we will have a club with half the turnover of our competitors.... and where do we go from there? The fact is, we need a new stadium. We don't NEED to win the league this year, we just want it so badly it hurts to think of not winning it. I have faith that Benitez can keep performing miracles a little longer, just another 7 months would do nicely.

£400 million for a new
£400 million for a new stadium in todays climate is suicide. We could for under £100 million Level the main stand, and make the Annie Rd the stand it should have always been, 18,000 mirroring the KOP ! LFC own all the land surrounding Anfield, yes the copacity would drop for a season but we really could have a 60,000 all seater stadium without moving to Stanley Park. Some have mentioned turning the pitch 90 degrees at Anfield an make the new Main Stand The New Kop bigger than anything seen anywhere before. I don't know if this is possible but surely it would do us for the next 10-15 years, and relatively cheap by new stadiums standards. Rafa needs more money each year to be able to compete with Man'ure and Chavski. YNWA
