Football FanCast columnist Rob Facey wonders
whether Liverpool fans believe the hype over Albert Riera?
Liverpool new
boy Albert Riera has spoken of his desire to win silverware at Anfield. The
winger completed an £8m transfer from La Liga side Espanyol on transfer
deadline day and is keen to immerse himself in the winning ways of Liverpool,
but haven't we heard all of this before?
"At Liverpool the most important thing
is when you are on the pitch to think only about winning," said Albert Riera,
as reported on Sky Sports.
"It is important to fight for everything - to fight to win the Premier League, the Champions League and the two cups.
"I am sure we will enjoy fighting for all of these titles.
"We want to challenge for everything until the last minute of the last game.
"I want to be in finals and to challenge for the Premier League as well because for this club it is very important to challenge for the league."
Isn't it worrying when a player's first press conference reads more like a press release from the club than anything to do with player himself? The thing is filling the squad with mediocrity does not equate to success.
Riera was at Manchester City a few years ago although spookily, nobody can remember anything about him. Surely this says a lot? Obviously not.
Riera, along with Gonzalez, Kuyt, Voronin and Bellamy to name but a few could be the reasons the US owners denied Benitez the funds to buy Gareth Barry.
Do they trust Benitez in the market and would they rather buy little and often than for out huge lump sums on single players. Somebody should tell them that it is about quality not quantity.
Will Riera even make a dent in Liverpool's style, let alone the Premier League as a whole?
£8m is a lot to spend on an average winger, and while that is undoubtedly what Liverpool need, if this is going to be "the season" that the players constantly promise, they would surely have to up their game?
