Will Liverpool fans buy into the hype?

Football FanCast columnist Rob Facey wonders whether Liverpool fans believe the hype over Albert Riera?

Liverpool new boy Albert Riera has spoken of his desire to win silverware at Anfield. The winger completed an £8m transfer from La Liga side Espanyol on transfer deadline day and is keen to immerse himself in the winning ways of Liverpool, but haven't we heard all of this before?

"At Liverpool the most important thing is when you are on the pitch to think only about winning," said Albert Riera, as reported on Sky Sports.

"It is important to fight for everything - to fight to win the Premier League, the Champions League and the two cups.

"I am sure we will enjoy fighting for all of these titles.

"We want to challenge for everything until the last minute of the last game.

"I want to be in finals and to challenge for the Premier League as well because for this club it is very important to challenge for the league."

Isn't it worrying when a player's first press conference reads more like a press release from the club than anything to do with player himself? The thing is filling the squad with mediocrity does not equate to success.

Riera was at Manchester City a few years ago although spookily, nobody can remember anything about him. Surely this says a lot? Obviously not.

Riera, along with Gonzalez, Kuyt, Voronin and Bellamy to name but a few could be the reasons the US owners denied Benitez the funds to buy Gareth Barry.

Do they trust Benitez in the market and would they rather buy little and often than for out huge lump sums on single players. Somebody should tell them that it is about quality not quantity.

Will Riera even make a dent in Liverpool's style, let alone the Premier League as a whole?

£8m is a lot to spend on an average winger, and while that is undoubtedly what Liverpool need, if this is going to be "the season" that the players constantly promise, they would surely have to up their game?

Im quite excited about
Im quite excited about Riera, people can look at his time at man city, but they hardly had top quality players around him did he.

We trust Rafa - we lost less
We trust Rafa - we lost less games than Manyoo last year so we have no reason to fear. Riera is a damn sight better than what we have got.

agree we should be buying a
agree we should be buying a better quality of player. it is not rafa's fault and he is the one that is having to make do with second best.

You base your opinion on him
You base your opinion on him from when he played at Man City 3-4 years ago? You obviously haven't being paying much attention to his career since. When he got back, he was a mainstay and a very good player, he went to Bordeaux and had a very successful time there, then went to Espanyol and was one of their best players. He was so good that he forced his way into the Spanish side, this is the same side that won the Euros. Now that he's at Liverpool, his former team mates are saying that have lost an excellent player and one of the most important players at the club. He may not be a David Silva or a Ricardo Quaresma, but that doesn't mean he is mediocrity.

He was 5.5m, at least get
He was 5.5m, at least get your facts right before writing an article. Although, I agree that he will not make much difference to us.

If you look at most of
If you look at most of Benitez's purchases that have flopped and/or moved on they may not have been good for the fans, but for the owners he managed to make profit. In terms of business his buys are pretty good.

You obviously havent paid
You obviously havent paid much attention to his time at Man City. He was played as a wing back and mainly operated on defensive duties in a struggling team. Since then he has excelled and Guillem Balague considers him to be 'the best winger in Europe' when on form. Quite an accolade and I hope he can raise his game consistently to those levels.

Honestly, do you think that
Honestly, do you think that if Rafa had the money to buy top players that he would only go for mediocre players in the transfer market?? (Answer in your head right now should say NO!!). Riera deserves the same chance as everybody else when signing for Liverpool, our full and total support. Remember when he played at Man City he was in a mediocre team at an earlier stage of his career. Your option otherwise as we have no riches to splash is that we could have kept Kewell!! (Again the answer in your head right now should be NO WAY MATE!!) Give Rafa the money and he will deliver what we all crave so badly.

Oh those loveable reds!-
Oh those loveable reds!- every year they waste £50m on average players- every year they are "going to do it"- its embarrasing watching it. 20 years fast approaching without a title, and i'll put my house on the fact that it will be another 20 if ever again that they win the league. Ok the blues are no nearer- but are very very close in league placings to the reds on a budget- every careful Moyes signing seems to be worth 5 chequebook buys by Benitez- all things being relative.. we are the succeeders on Merseyside for sure. If you are a kid (wherever in the world you live) reading this and looking for someone to glory hunt, then think twice- pinning your colours to the Anfield mast is setting yourself up for a life of dissapointment, choose one of the big 4 (ManU, Chelsea, Arsenal, City) and taste success.

Oh My Bluenose friend.
Oh My Bluenose friend. Simple as this. Current odds on Everton to be relegated 40-1, Liverpool to be relegated 1500-1. Dont fool yourself talking about league positions pal. Our passion is as strong as yours for our respective clubs, the problem being that we are so used to success and you are always comparing yourself to where you are in comparison to Liverpoolin the league. QUESTION: How do you spot the Evertonian in a pub? ANSWER: He is the guy who is always talking about Liverpool!!
