Football FanCast columnist Frank Winter
looks at Spurs' desire to play hardball with regards to Berbatov and wonders at
what point Sir Alex says enough is enough and looks elsewhere.
Dimitar Berbatov is undoubtedly
one of the best strikers in Europe at the moment and his arrival at Old
Trafford would be welcomed, but at what price? According to reports in the Guardian this morning, Spurs have
decided to play hardball and looking to United to up the ante, but I feel we
should hold firm and if they don't succumb to our ‘take it or leave it' standpoint, then we should look elsewhere.
You don't have to be brain of
Britain to work out that Sir Alex needs to bring in another striker into the
club. We were heavily reliant on Cristiano Ronaldo to provide the goals last
season and for all of Rooney and Tevez's contributions last season, you would
hardly call either prolific.
We have been linked with plenty of strikers in the past few weeks but the two names that are most prominent in most supporters wish lists are Berbatov and my own personal choice Klass Jan Huntelaar. Don't get me wrong I am a huge fan of the Bulgarian and feel he will do a fantastic job at United, but for me Huntelaar is more prolific and would provide that predatory instinct in front of goal that we so desperately lack.
Klass Jan Huntelaar is currently the most prolific striker in Europe and his goalscoring record at Ajax is comparable to what Ruud van Nistelrooy's was when he was at PSV. He shares a lot of the same characteristics that Ruud possesses in front of goal, although offer's slightly more in and around the box; something our former Dutchman failed to contribute and in truth was the reason that Sir Alex felt the need to move him on. He also works out at around £10m cheaper than the reported fee Spurs are after and unlike the North Londoners, Ajax are seemingly prepared to do business.
So what is the best deal for Manchester United and is Berbatov really a better option than Huntelaar? With Spurs prepared to play hardball, like they did with Carrick, I just wonder at what point does Sir Alex Ferguson declare enough is enough and look elsehwere?
