Huntelaar is good but in the same class as Spurs star?

Football FanCast columnist Jeff Malone feels that Manchester United should look no further than Berbatov in their quest to bring in a striker.

When Sir Alex Ferguson came out last week and suggested that he only intended to make one new addition this summer, you didn't need to be brain of Britain to work out where he intended to improve.

We have been crying out for striker; a predator in the mould of an Ole Solskjaer or a Ruud Van Nistelrooy for some time now as, we have been relying far too heavily on Cristiano Ronaldo.

Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Rooney and Tevez, but as a pairing do they provide the necessary firepower? It is fair to say that we would have struggled to win the title with their goals alone.

There has been a huge amount of speculation doing the rounds today that Jan Huntelaar has expressed an interest in Manchester United. The quotes attributed to the articles suggest that it was more than just paper talk and he is certainly a player of the calibre and quality that would be a success at Manchester United, but in all honesty I would prefer to see us look elsewhere. This is not because I doubt the Dutchman could do a necessary job for us; it is just that I would prefer to see us move for Dimitar Berbatov.

The Bulgarian in my opinion is the best striker in the country and stands alone. Torres is a great finisher but he hardly contributes the amount of assists that Berbatov provides. He is the closest thing I have seen to an Eric Cantona and possesses the same arrogant strut on a football pitch. The two games against us this season, he was absolutely immense and gave Rio Ferdinand the hardest game he had all season. Berbatov just oozes class and will add so much more to the team as a whole.

I had the misfortune to be at Eastlands when Spurs turned over City and with 10 men. Berbatov played the lone role for two thirds of that game and was possibly the finest, strongest attacking performance I have seen. City had to use Richards and Dunne to try and double up on him and just kept possession time after time. If I ever thought he was good against us, this did more than endorse it.

There seems to be a problem with any such move at the moment because Spurs are reportedly asking too much for him. You can't blame them, he is by far their best player and being that they are on the ascendency they cannot afford to lose someone of his abilities, but shouldn't United take a punt with a bid. The player only talked last year of his admiration for the football club and his desire for Champions League, so for me we seem the perfect fit; our very own mark II Cantona and the goalscorer that we so desperately need.

So who do my fellow United fans think would be the better option? Huntelaar will be the cheaper option but isn't it worth going that extra mile for Berbatov - he has proved himself in the Premier League after all?

Definitely Berbatov, he

Definitely Berbatov, he offers us flexibility with a variety of formations, would link well with Rooney or Tevez.

We should experiment with a

We should experiment with a three man attack with Berbatov up on his own and Rooney and Tevez in behind him, awesome attack that would be.

Aint going to happen as

Aint going to happen as Spurs are asking too much money for him. The only way would be put a low bid in and hope it unsettles him enough to make life difficult for the Spurs board and force them to sell.

berbs aint going anywhere

berbs aint going anywhere you losers ahahaha. [*@!$] army!!!!

yea marcus and who got the

yea marcus and who got the hump when real madrid did it with ronaldo ? so dont get the hump when peps do that [*@!$] with your team . who went off crying to uefa? man u ?

"The only way would be put a low bid in and hope it unsettles him enough to make life difficult for the Spurs board and force them to sell." You stupid muppet manc(or probably not) prat - So Real Madrid shouldn't behave that way to take your best player, but you can do it to Spurs?! Idiots like you make me want to be sick. Spurs probably won't keep Berbs - but I'd rather lose him to a big team abroad for half the cash than have you delight over him in a red shirt... And thankfully Levy feels the same way! COYS!

Too much money? Fair

Too much money? Fair valuation in my opinion ... but your right, Berby ain't going nowhere ... COYS

im a spurs fan and i pray

im a spurs fan and i pray man utd dont get him. mainly because he would be prefect fopr them and he would be awesome. he does epitomise cantona......i hope he gives us some loyalty and staysat least for one more season. people like him come around once a decade

I'm starting to believe he

I'm starting to believe he will stay with us and we'll finally break the top 4 and then he'll stay happy. what I KNOW is that we should never sell him to any other Premier league team as it would be suicide. the man is awesome as some of you Manure fans readily admit

If you get Berba you will

If you get Berba you will win the lot next season. He will get you 25+ goals and ample assists no danger, and offers you something that no-one else in the league can give you. His first touch is phenomenal and he seems to make space appear out of thin air. The only reason for why he might not come to you is because we are inflating his price specifically to stop United buying him. Primarily this is because Spurs don't want him playing for a team in the same division as us, and secondly it's because the Spurs board are still annoyed at how Carrick ended up leaving us for you i.e. a similar sort of thing as what Real Madrid are doing with Ronaldo now.
