Football FanCast columnist Rob Swan looks ahead to the climax of the season's title race and feels it will be totally unjust for United to lose out to Chelsea.
A few months ago, not many would have predicted such a close
finale to this season's Premier League. At one stage outsiders Arsenal appeared
on course to upset the odds, but expended all their energy too prematurely,
faltered and eventually derailed. Manchester United duly capitalised, snatching
the baton off Arsene Wenger's side, but several slips allowed Chelsea to sneak back into contention. Now
into the home straight, meters away from breaking the finishing tape, a photo-finish
might be the only way to separate the two sides this weekend.
In a week which has seen Avram Grant and Sir Alex Ferguson trade paranoid slurs
at each other's clubs, as well as the teams they face this Sunday, the pressure
will be on United to ensure they come away from the JJB Stadium with all three
points and a 10th Premier League title. Ferguson knows it, the players all know
it, and Avram Grant has certainly made it clear that he's of the same opinion -
mind games at such an important stage of the season? Surely not.
Luckily, if there's one man you'd want in charge of such an operation, to
concentrate on matters in hand and to haul the club over the finishing line,
it's the veteran Scot. So experienced with these battles is the 66-year-old,
anything less than a United victory this Sunday would be a genuine
surprise. However, Steve Bruce's side have made it clear that they won't
roll over and die. The difference between a £4.32m payout for 15th position
compared to £6.48m for a 12th place finish means that the Latic's own job is far
from complete. And Bruce's managerial credentials would be significantly
improved if he ends up having the last word in preventing United from retaining
their Premier League trophy.
One comforting thought is that Wigan have
never beaten United, in fact, they've never managed to defeat any of the 'Big
Four' teams during their tenure in the top-flight. But whilst this fact may act
as a reassuring statistic, their performance at Stamford Bridge
last month shows that being lured into a false sense of security against
Bruce's side could prove fatal. Emile Heskey's injury time equaliser stunned
the Blues little over three-weeks ago, and prompted a chorus of boos from the Chelsea faithful. How
things have changed. They say a week is a lifetime in politics; the past few
weeks have shown that exactly the same is true for football.
Wigan's never-say-die attitude that night is something Ferguson will have duly noted, and will mean
that one goal probably won't be enough for his side this weekend. In order to
make the game safe and ensure the Premiership trophy heads back to Old Trafford
once again, United's best form of defence will be to attack. With Wayne Rooney
looking more and more doubtful to feature with each passing hour, the onus will
fall on Carlos Tevez to lead by example just as he did against Barcelona so effectively last week. Whilst
Cristiano Ronaldo's previous successes against Wigan
- including his mesmeric performance against them in the 2006 League Cup final
- will all pale into insignificance if he manages to produce another
man-of-the-match display on Sunday.
It's been a mostly enjoyable breeze rather than a draining, slog of a race, but
the job is far from over. Some might say that it will only truly begin on
Sunday afternoon. Off the back of such an impressive season, losing the league
on the final day would be catastrophic and would feel unjust. After all, who
could honestly say that Chelsea's
performances this season have warranted their name to be etched onto the
Premier League trophy over Manchester United's? Neutrals, help me out here!
But the league table is never wrong, it does indeed, never lie, and history
only ever remembers the victors, so may the winner take all this weekend. It's
not often that the final day of the season carries so much importance, but like
all great memorable marathon runs, this one really has gone right to the wire.
CHECK OUT THE RIGHT
RESULT LEAGUE TABLE - Chelsea shouldn't be anywhere near the title race and
to think people use to call Manchester United lucky and always use to getting the
rub of the green!
