Football FanCast columnist Rob Facey looks back at the most drawn out transfer saga of the summer and wonders what the future holds for Cristiano Ronaldo.
So there we have it. A conclusion to the never ending story. Cristiano Ronaldo has decided that he will be gracing the Premier League with his presence next season, despite spending the past two months flirting outrageously with Real Madrid. United fans will be please, naturally, but has their relationship with the player now changed for the worst?
Last season he was simply unplayable. The best player in England by a mile, the Portuguese winger was unfortunate that his big chance to shine at the European Championships was dogged by a niggling injury.
Prior to this, however, he was certain that he would dominate the summer, regardless. No sooner had the final whistle blown in Moscow after the Champions League final the rumours started flying. Secret meetings and tapping up. Flights to Madrid, flights to Lisbon, Real officials in the Euro training camp, the lot.
Will he, wont he? Who really cares anymore? These are all questions we asked ourselves as we turned to the back page with baited breath, half expecting to see Ronaldo outside the Bernabau with in that famous white strip.
But no. He will be strutting his stuff at Old Trafford once more, for how long nobody is sure, and this is what he had to say about it.
“I never wanted to leave against Manchester United's will and I'm going to say something here that I've never told anybody: if we hadn't been European champions I probably wouldn't have even thought about going to Madrid,” Ronaldo said, as reported in The Guardian.
“But after we'd won the Champions League, I felt that in five years I had helped win everything there was to win."
“We'd won the Premier League twice and I'd won a host of individual awards, including the best goalscorer in the Premier League, Champions League and in Europe. So I felt that maybe I needed a new challenge.”
Hmm, hardly sounds convincing does he?
This statement could not have come at a worse time for Ferguson who, although will be over the moon that this tedious affair has finally been put to rest, only last week stated that he will be looking into the eyes of all of his players to see if they still had the desire to challenge trophies.
So, after this summer, in which all other business at United has seemingly stopped to ensure that he stays, what does the future hold for the winger?
What do fans think of Ronaldo now?
Is he merely doing this so that he could dare return to the UK in the future, or does he think he still has something to prove?
Will Cristiano Ronaldo be booed by United fans in the early part of the season?
Can he ever be booed after the sensational season he has just had? Do United fans think he is here for life, or just another season? More importantly, does anybody care any more?
