columnist Mark Bryans looks ahead to next season and wonders what
Manchester United can expect from their array of talented youngsters.
When questioned at a charity golf tournament earlier this
week, Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said he believed the likes of Anderson, Nani, Rooney
and Ronaldo would vastly improve as footballers in the upcoming season. This
signal of intent confirmed both Sir Alex's belief in his young stars and also
his conviction that Cristiano Ronaldo will be a Manchester United player for at
least another year.
But how much can we really expect to see from the impressive
crop of youngsters at Fergie's disposal? The Scotsman still believes that Paul
Scholes has at least two seasons left at the top of his game at that Ryan Giggs
could easily play 25 games next term, so first of all players such as Nani and
Anderson need to get their chance to play before they can show any signs of
improvement.
Those of you who have read previous articles of mine will know that my views of last season's imports of Nani and Anderson are mixed. I think Anderson is a real class act and can really stamp his authority on a game, no matter who the opposition, whereas Nani is so ridiculously inconsistent with the ball that he goes from the sublime to the ridiculous in a matter of moments. Both have bags of potential, but Anderson is surely the one who has started to show this potential on the field, even breaking into a world-class Brazilian midfield at international level.
Wayne Rooney needs to score more goals; it is as simple as that. He is key to Manchester United's attacking game, but should score more of the guilt-edge chances he receives courtesy of razor sharp attacking potential surrounding him on the pitch. He gives 100% every time he pulls on the shirt, but this is sometimes a disadvantage as he chases every lost cause right back into his own penalty area and if United break he is missing from the attack.
If Sir Alex's assumption that Ronaldo is still to improve is correct then it will be breathtaking to see him in action next season. I honestly believe that, by his standards at least, the Portuguese winger may have a quiet season. What with the furore surrounding his future and the hype of his ability he will be a marked man in every single game he plays.
But I hope this season may see players like Danny Simpson and Fraizer Campbell earn a chance in the first team. It has been a long time since a home-grown Manchester United trainee has broken into the side and these two definitely have shown early promise. Simpson has filled in for Wes Brown at right back and looked solid, possibly even better at attacking than Brown. Whereas Campbell's scoring record when both out on loan and playing for the reserves is very impressive, and if he can stay fit he may find himself above the injury-prone Louis Saha in the pecking order.
At the end of the day it all comes down to the amount of competitive football these promising youngsters play next season as to whether we see vast improvements in their ability. But the game has changed since the days of the mid 90's when Beckham, Scholes, Butt and the Neville brothers burst onto the scene and no club is willing to take the risk of dumping £100,000+ a week stars for youngsters yearning for the chance of playing first team football, but Sir Alex Ferguson is known to make the odd exception and Simpson and Campbell may play crucial, albeit peripheral, roles in any success the Red Devils have in the upcoming season.
For Rooney and Ronaldo it is a case of improving even further and becoming even better, and for Nani and Anderson it is all about seizing their opportunities with both hands when they come along and trying to nail down a place in a team overflowing with midfield options and attacking potential. All in all I believe that we can expect to see improvements all around from this crop of extremely talented youngsters and with the likes of Giggs, Scholes and Neville around them, they will continue to go from strength to strength.
