After the humiliation of a 2-0 Carling Cup defeat against Coventry; Fergie new babes were slaughtered by the press and some questioned they had what it took to move up to next level.Michael McKenna examined them closely in the 4-0 drubbing of Wigan and feels the critics may have been somewhat premature in writing them off. At last Man Utd win by a margin worthy of the money they have spent over the summer by thrashing Wigan 4-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday. Most pleasing of all is how well the younger players came in and gave performances that bellied their age.
Gerard Pique; a player both Barcelona and Real Madrid chased
in the summer for a large sum, played well at right back before moving to
centre back for the injured Vidic. Pique looked comfortable on the ball and
commanded well at the back alongside Ferdinand. Surely, in the coming weeks
United fans will finally get to see why Man Utd decided to keep hold of this
extremely talented defender and could he be one for the future? On Saturday’s evidence; most definitely yes.
Another young defender made his premiership debut for Man Utd this
weekend in the shape of Danny Simpson. Simpson looked accomplished at right
back when he came on for Vidic early in the first half. His debut was almost
crowned with a first United goal only for an outstanding save from the Wigan
goalkeeper Chris Kirkland. The future looks bright for Simpson too and
hopefully now he can build on his superb weekend performance.
All that said, special praise has to be reserved for £20 million summer
signing Anderson. At long last it looks like he could live up to that hefty
price-tag. This lad is frightfully fast with an array of tricks that rival
even Ronaldo but what impressed me most was his ability to keep the ball as
well as his sublime passing ability. He constantly hit 50 yard passes and
consistently pulled them off. Anderson controlled the play through a central
midfield role and maybe it looks like he could maintain his position in the
middle especially in the long term absence of both Carrick and Hargreaves.
All bodes well for United and the rest of their season so let’s just
hope their injury crisis doesn’t worsen.
