Norwich City PodJockey Dave Freezer cannot understand why the Carnaries have failed to offer captain Mark Fotheringham a new contract.

I was at Colney for Glenn Roeder's usual Friday morning press conference a couple of weeks ago, in between the Bristol City and Burnley games, and he revealed to the gathered media an extremely interesting Pro Zone statistic about our captain Mark Fotheringham.

The stats from the Bristol City game, when despite losing 2-1 City well and truly passed Bristol off the pitch, revealed that we had made around 360 passes at Ashton Gate that day.

According to Roeder that was more passes than any other team has made at Ashton Gate all season and usually higher than 250 is considered good.

I thought we had played very well on that horrible wet day in Bristol but I didn't realise we had played quite that exceptionally!

Roeder also said that Fozzy had made 60 of those 360 passes, with 50 normally considered to be an excellent individual performance. Just how important his influence is to our passing game was demonstrated by our ineffective play against Ipswich this weekend when Fozzy was absent due to a neck injury.

I don't really see why the club are delaying offering Fozzy his new contract as he has said he wants to stay and is happy in Norwich, he has been one of our best players this season and he is our captain.

We want to get him to put pen to paper before another club realises he's available on the cheap!

There's only one stat that counts at the end of the day though and that is goals. We are the third lowest scorers in the Championship, behind Leicester and Scunthorpe, with just 44 goals in 43 matches which works out as an average of 1.02 goals scored per game this season.

When you compare to this to our next opponents West Brom, who have scored 82 goals in 42 games at an average of 1.95 goals scored per game this season, it is absolutely pathetic.

Finding players who can contribute goals from across the pitch is where Glenn is going to have to produce the most magic this summer.

Regular players this season such as Shackell, Camara, Bertrand, and Pattison have not managed a single goal between them all season despite a collective 105 appearances.

Shackell looks terrified when ever he gets close to scoring a goal and so does Gary Doherty, who despite signing for the club as a striker and being a big physical threat, has managed just one goal all season.

Otsemebor and Croft (1), Fozzy (2), Russell and Huckerby (4), these stats just aren't good enough and it is the main problem which needs to be addressed this summer. There is a good base of ability to our squad but if we are going to be involved at the right end of the division next year, we need a major injection of skill, flair and creativity.

Fortunately, I think we've got the right man in Glenn to find us the right players but have we got the right board to back him?
