With our English quartet ready to do battle with their foreign counterparts in the quarter-finals of this season's Champions League, FFC columnist Vinny Banks asks how the four teams would fare in a battle of England. In the first of this series, it's the North-West XI vs. the London XI.
Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool - all aiming for Champions League glory. Will United and Liverpool do the north of England proud, or will the London duo progress further this season?
Champions League aside, I felt it was time to bring the four teams together in a North vs. South encounter. Would the north-west with Manchester United and Liverpool reign supreme? Or would it be the Londoners' select XI of Arsenal and Chelsea?
Here's my analysis:
At Manchester United you have sheer pace, attacking prowess and a defence that is hard to breach. United are a footballing superpower, feared by many and loaded with international superstars from front to back. Likewise Liverpool are filled with internationals and have the most prized asset in world football, Steven Gerrard. Along with striking ace Fernando Torres, they will make up a fearsome north-west select!
One from each will be the way forward for the centre-half pairing. Jamie Carragher, possibly the worlds most improved player of the last few seasons, and Serbia's finest talent, Nemanja Vidic. Along with Steve Finnan, Patrice Evra and Dutch stalwart Edwin Van Der Sar, the north-west have an extremely strong back line.
On to the midfield. Here we have quality oozing out of both outfits; goals coming from all angles, and tackles flying in quicker than tracer bullets - a selection headache that would be too much for Anfield's Rafa Benitez.
But here is how we line up: Ronaldo, Gerrard, Mascherano and Giggs. Now tell me that formidable four hasn't got goals written all over it. Ronaldo has undoubted class, Stevie G is everyone's first choice, and Mascherano and Giggs offer defensive stability and a football education respectively that money simply can't buy.
Mr Rooney and Spanish hotshot Fernando Torres complete my star-studded north-west line up.
A trip down the M1 sees me roll up at the London HQ.
Arsenal - after seeing Thierry leave in the summer - must have thought a season of consolidation was in order. But how wrong were they? Playing football that would match the days of Viera and Petit, scoring goals for fun with Togo's Fresh Prince Adebayor, Arsenal are just as hungry for success. And then there's the Russian revolution in the shape of West London's finest. Chelsea are proving the critics wrong and Avram Grant must have invested in a magic wand to have matched his predecessor's early record as the Israeli has got them on the brink of a League Cup success at his first attempt.
Petr Cech, possibly the worlds finest shot stopper will wear the number 1 shirt and with Toure, Terry, Clichy and Sagna, this is a quintet with phenomenal strength, power and pace.
Cesc Fabregas, possibly the most gifted technical player in the Premiership partners Chelsea ace Frank Lampard in the middle of the park, with international goalscorer Shaun Wright-Phillips and Baltic's finest Alex Hleb on either side. This midfield set-up will undoubtedly be a tough one to break down.
Adebayor and African counterpart Didier Drogba complete the line up for the Londoners, offering pure pace, strength and the finishing ability envied by most for the London XI.
On the touchline, it has to be Fergie v Wenger, another great opportunity for their bitter rivalry to be renewed.
So readers, FFC bloggers, PodJockeys and columnists; who do you think would win the battle of the superpowers? Would the north-west be too strong for their London counterparts? Or would the southerners overcome their northern rivals?
Let the game begin.
