Football FanCast guest columnist Calum Dawson feels a Gareth Barry move to Arsenal will prove the perfect move all round for Aston Villa.

You can only imagine how Gareth Barry felt this morning as he drove into Villa's training ground for the first time since his suspension. Embarrassed, somewhat ashamed; you certainly couldn't blame any of his teammates giving him somewhat of a cold shoulder this morning.

The whole proposed transfer in recent weeks and has been nothing short of a shambles in all honesty, where nobody has come out of it smelling of roses. It is fair to say Liverpool are, the biggest culprits of this whole sorry episode, but you can't help feel there has been rather an element of tit for tat since, from Villa and the player.

So how and when will this transfer be resolved? Martin O'Neill threw another spanner in the works yesterday by claiming that Arsenal have expressed an interest in the player and want to be kept informed of developments. A move to North London would certainly be a slap in the face for Rafa Benitez; who felt he had all but landed his man but I'm sure Villa fans will certainly hope a deal could be struck.

How true Arsenal's interest is in Barry remains to be seen; few would forgive Martin O'Neill for playing a few mind games of his own in order to ruffle Rafa's feathers. It would certainly be the best move for Aston Villa, as not only will they get one over on Benitez, but they will also be able to get Justin Hoyte in exchange; a player that has been linked with O'Neill many times and will be the latest addition to his young English brigade he is forming at Villa Park. It looks the perfect deal for both Martin O'Neill, Arsene Wenger and dare I say the player.

Yep it would be a good deal
Yep it would be a good deal for Arsenal as we badly need a decent foil for cesc in the midfield, he can also play in the backline as well if need be.

yep, sounds good to me. I'd be happy to 'give' him to the gunners for £13m. Much more desirable than than liverpool getting him.

Rafa appears to be somewhat
Rafa appears to be somewhat schizophrenic demanding £10m for Scott Carson, who is of limited ability, and then wanting to pay more than £16m for Gareth Barry, who is of high ability. He would do much better at Arsenal than Liverpool where he will actually challenge for the title and CL. Arsenal are more likely to be in the CL every year than Liverpool.

No it ain't fair to say
No it ain't fair to say Liverpool are the biggest culprits in this, far from it. Villa need to get realistic. Barry wouldn't be good for Arsenal either, he isn't the type of player they need, they don't need another passer they need someone who'll get around and do Cesc's donkey work, someone in the mould of a Gattuso, not a slow Barry. If they don't the risk of Spurs overtaking them in the top four is evident.

Bitter O'Neill was the one
Bitter O'Neill was the one who broke the news to the media not Liverpool. The Reds have done no wrong. Would welcome Barry but Alonso is better. If Barry goes to Arsenal and we keep Alonso and get Keane, all will be happy (except Barry maybe, as he will have to learn a foreign language to communicate at the Emirates). You have to feel for Barry in this pathetic situation. He has served Villa very very well and deserves a good send off, wherever he goes. YNWA

"The whole proposed transfer in recent weeks and has been nothing short of a shambles in all honesty, where nobody has come out of it smelling of roses. It is fair to say Liverpool are, the biggest culprits of this whole sorry episode" Can someone tell me how Liverpool are the biggest culprits in this shambles, when its clearly been MoN who cant keep his petulant trap shut?? he comes up with something (non) constructive to say about the affair, almost daily!! Liverpool showed an interest in signing Barry, Barry confirmed he wanted to leave - open and closed case you'd have thought? no, O'Neill continues to do his best impression of a toddler with far too many toys in his pram. Benitez responded to O'Neills initial protestations, publicly, and has said nothing about it since, except "we are trying hard to sign our targets....". I can understand that Villa fans are upset - I'd be as gutted if say Tottenham cmae in for Gerrard, but O'Neill should just man up and accept that you cant keep an unhappy player.

Think about the logic
Think about the logic Villatone and you'll soon see the flaws in your idea! Villa cannot accept £13m for Barry without accepting the same from Liverpool, highly unlikely seeing as they have already turned down £15m! It is illegal in the rules of the game for a club to agree a fee with one club but turn down another club at the same fee. They COULD insist they will not sell to ANY Premier league club but not accept one club and not another as both would be considered equal rivals. I am getting to the point I don't care whether we get Barry or not anymore. I like him as a player but am sick of MON's whinging and messing around. £18m is clearly over-priced so I am beginning to think I'd prefer to see Barry staying there where he doesn't want to be until next year and then Villa having to sell him for £10m because he'll only have 12 months on his contract so will be too close to a Bosman to risk it. Liverpool should keep Alonso for another year and then get Barry.

what sh!te!!! how are
what sh!te!!! how are liverpool the biggest culprits? they made a bid for a player, that was leaked by the birmingham mail a day before the liverpool echo, MON comes out a confirms what would have been just another transfer rumour and has a go at liverpool in the papers and rafa responds once and ever since then it has only been MON in the papers EVERYDAY talking to anyone who will listen about the bl00dy tranfer. then you hear this muck about gerard sayin he'd like to see Barry at anfield and everyone cries "Tapping up" but everyone igonres the fact 3 separate Villa players all came out to the press saying how much they would love to have Crouch at villaPark. I used to really like Villa (due to the past large irish connection) and really liked MON due to supporting Celtic, but now have to admit i will be looking for flat on there faces next year.
