guest columnist Max White isn't surprise that player power exists given
club's outlandish demands.
If there is one thing that grates me about modern
day football, then it is the constant hypocrisy, contradictions and double
standards of not only players but clubs. It is ingrained; one of the
reasons why the game is slowly in demise and why in my opinion it has reached
the point of no return.
You talk to any football fan and they will spout on about player power, their
extortionate wages and the increasing lack of loyalty they show to their
respective clubs. It is fair to say that there has been a fair few players this
summer, like your Ronaldo's and Adebayor's of this world who have tested the
patience of their clubs to the very limit, however what about the players who
go through the correct channels, keep quiet in quest of a move, but in the end
are faced with having to resort to a media outburst, due to their clubs high
demands.
Gareth Barry and Dimitar Berbatov are two players, both in their prime who have one request and that is to play Champions League football. Both have given excellent service to their football club, Barry especially, and although both Villa and Spurs are very much in the ascendency are not likely to breach the top 4 anytime soon.
Neither player is a journeyman footballer, who craves the big signing on fees, they are simply two dedicated pros who want to progress in their careers and as they are in their prime - should we really be standing in their way? Maybe both players would have been better off in not going through the correct procedures and instead handed in requests from day one; you kind of feel that they would have been at their desired clubs had that been the case.
The projected transfers of Barry to Liverpool and Berbatov to Man United has become a long series of political stand-offs and dare I say tit for tat. It hasn't painted any party in the best of lights and all it has achieved is an increasing amount of uncertainty at the very time that their respective squads should be settled and geared up for the new season. Are the players being punished for being honest?
As much as O'Neill will hope that Barry would settle back at Villa and Ramos will hope the same for Berbatov, the bottom line is all these sorry episodes has done is breed contempt between the player and club. Instead of all parties moving on, both Villa and Spurs maybe left with an unhappy player, short of motivation and will always be looking elsewhere.
Clubs are very quick to get rid of players they deem surplus to requirements, but when a player decides he has desires to move on, they put a tremendous amount of barriers up to protect their assets. Supporters may moan about the increase of player power within the game, but is it any wonder in some cases?
