Football FanCast columnist Davis Lowe feels that Sir Alex is well in his right to make a complaint to FIFA and feels that suitable sanctions need to be put in place to act as a future deterrent.

It is a disease that has spread into the modern game and one that is continually condoned. The tapping up of players is now rife within Europe and has become common practice on our shores. It is something that has to stop and UEFA have to act now in order to prevent the transfer system becoming an absolute farce.

How do they allow clubs to get away with it and why are there no sanctions in place to stop it? Is there any point in players signing contracts when any club can approach them in a hotel, service station or a Milan ice cream parlor? It has started to border on the ridiculous and I really hope that Sir Alex Ferguson does report Real Madrid to FIFA, as they are guilty more than most.

I think that Sir Alex has hit the nail on the head with much of what he has said with regards to Madrid. It seems to be the common practice at the Bernabeu, where in a matter of weeks their intentions have turned from Cesc Fabregas to Cristiano Ronaldo. They seem to throw their hook out there and wait to see who bites. The problem for Sir Alex is that the player has taken a huge chunk of the bait which has done little, but fuel the flames and raise questions over the player's long term future.

So what should the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal do to make the authorities take note? Wenger himself has also suffered at the hands of Real Madrid, who can forget the Jose Reyes saga and it is clear that they tried to adopt a similar tact with Cesc a few weeks ago. The Frenchman mentioned after the infamous Hleb ice cream parlor meeting that he tended to lodge a complaint with UEFA and you wonder if it fell on death ears. It makes you wonder whether the English game, as a whole, need to make a stand against FIFA and threaten to either boycott competition domestically or internationally until suitable sanctions are imposed.

So what are the right sanctions to prevent this illegal practice? Give clubs a two year European ban? Should clubs found guilty be given a 12month transfer embargo? Or will a heavy fine in the region of £10-20m be a suitable deterrant?

Real madrid are the worse
Real madrid are the worse for it and it is not often that I agree with old sour face but he is dead right. Reyes was the start but we seem to have again been done over with Flamini and Hleb. It has tobe stopped but UEFA and FIFA are about as competent as the FA.

something def needs to be
something def needs to be done but giving a club like madrid a £10m fine is nothing to them... make them go a year without being allowed to use the transfer window and things may change

If respect is not at the
If respect is not at the heart of competitive sport then the future is indeed gloomy. The powers that be have a duty to act now and stop this blatant tapping up. If they took action against Real Madrid immediately it would draw a line that other clubs would realise that they cross at their peril. So, an example should be made and a years ban from European competitions should be the punishment. A fine would be laughed off. Having said that of course the recent outpourings of Ferguson does leave one thinking about pots and kettles.

Hi I want to report Real for using the media to tap up Ronaldo even though I have been doing the same thing in regard to Dimitar Berbatov

I am not sure if either the Euro ban or the transfer embargo would work but both together would be the only viable solution. As for us tapping Fat berbatov, you must be joking. it is his agent who has been drumming up the transfer to United and we on these pages and blogs have been discussing the addition of berbatov to the Kings of Europe.

To say Fergie has done it is childish at best! This article is very well balanced and written by someone who understands the situation. Real Madrid might as well pay Marca's reporters wages! How many other clubs have a paper to do there transfer fishing? Good article well written!

I am a man utd fan, dont get me wrong but I say change nothing. Without clubs like Madrid the off-season wouldnt be as much fun. And where else would we dump our used up bekhams and nistelroys. Where else would we sell Ronaldo 5 years from now, when we dont need him anymore. Its a symbiotic relationship. Real needs to please its fans, we need to wi trophies. It will al work out in the end.

dave: What do you mean man U
dave: What do you mean man U do it all the time? Its not clear to me because if journalists speculate on a list of players SAF is targeting just like they do for all other teams is not the same as Real madrid officials telling everyone who cares to listen that Christiano is theirs by right and his time at Man Utd is over unless he is being enslaved. Just read Bernard Schusters comments and compare like with like. Man Utd have always made offers to clubs with players who interest them and gone on negotiation tables without unsettling players. That is why, Hargreaves was bought after the Munich president himself had made a statement that if a concrete offer came last summer, he would be allowed to go and Man Utd made that offer which Bayern Munich consented to. Man utd had initially shown an interest the previous summer, were turned down by Bayern and United accepted the fact till Bayern felt it was time to clean out their squad. Remember the player himself had consistently told the world that he wanted an immediate transfer to manchester to be near his family. Possibly just remind me of which particular players have been tapped up by Man Utd against the consent of their clubs. Give me a break.
