Football FanCast columnist Davis Lowe feels that
Sir Alex is well in his right to make a complaint to FIFA and feels that
suitable sanctions need to be put in place to act as a future deterrent.
It is a disease that has spread into
the modern game and one that is continually condoned. The tapping up of players
is now rife within Europe and has become common practice on our shores. It is
something that has to stop and UEFA have to act now in order to prevent the
transfer system becoming an absolute farce.
How do they allow clubs to get away
with it and why are there no sanctions in place to stop it? Is there any point
in players signing contracts when any club can approach them in a hotel,
service station or a Milan ice cream parlor? It has started to border on the
ridiculous and I really hope that Sir Alex Ferguson does report Real Madrid to
FIFA, as they are guilty more than most.
I think that Sir Alex has hit the nail on the head with much of what he has said with regards to Madrid. It seems to be the common practice at the Bernabeu, where in a matter of weeks their intentions have turned from Cesc Fabregas to Cristiano Ronaldo. They seem to throw their hook out there and wait to see who bites. The problem for Sir Alex is that the player has taken a huge chunk of the bait which has done little, but fuel the flames and raise questions over the player's long term future.
So what should the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal do to make the authorities take note? Wenger himself has also suffered at the hands of Real Madrid, who can forget the Jose Reyes saga and it is clear that they tried to adopt a similar tact with Cesc a few weeks ago. The Frenchman mentioned after the infamous Hleb ice cream parlor meeting that he tended to lodge a complaint with UEFA and you wonder if it fell on death ears. It makes you wonder whether the English game, as a whole, need to make a stand against FIFA and threaten to either boycott competition domestically or internationally until suitable sanctions are imposed.
So what are the right sanctions to prevent this illegal practice? Give clubs a two year European ban? Should clubs found guilty be given a 12month transfer embargo? Or will a heavy fine in the region of £10-20m be a suitable deterrant?
