Football FanCast columnist Jerome Johnstone feels that Kevin Keegan made a valid point and feels his words can be levied at a lot of other clubs.

Kevin Keegan is very much an enigma in football and you really either love or loath him. I personally have great admiration and respect for the man for the simple reason that in the modern day game it is rare that you are treated to honesty. There are no flies on Kevin Keegan, no false promises, no 5yr plans - a man who is desperate to bring success to a football club and realises that he hasn't the resources at present to achieve it. What is so wrong about that?

He makes valid points and I don't think that Keegan was just speaking about Newcastle as it can certainly be levied at other clubs. How many teams can you really see cracking the top 4 come next season? I personally can only see two in Everton and Spurs - are the likes of Aston Villa, Man City, Newcastle or Portsmouth really going to have any higher aspirations than finishing in the top 6, given their current squads?

Everton and Spurs have been in and around the top 4 in the last few years with the toffees actually achieving the feat back in 2005. They once again had a fantastic season and David Moyes has performed minor miracles and produce as hardworking an outfit as there is in the League. If the Scot is able to go out and bring some genuine quality and more depth to this squad then they have a great chance to overhaul their great rivals. Injuries have cost them dear and you kind of feel that Yakubu needs assistance in the goalscoring stakes. It will be interesting to see if Moyes gets the full backing of the board - they are certainly have a great foundation laid and you really don't want to see them miss the boat.

Spurs for me have been the biggest underachievers this season and it is absolutely criminal given the quality they have. I remember seeing them at Anfield this year and for long periods of the game played us off the park, and this is when they were 3rd bottom. They are geared up very much to join up at the top and fully understand why the likes of Jose Mourinho were claiming that they had bridged the gap and it should be considered a top 5. It just hasn't clicked this season for them but they have already shown signs under Ramos that they mean business. The Carling Cup would have given them a real boost and a taste of more to come and the fact they have brought in Modric, have signalled their intent and his arrival of will be the first of many no doubt.

I really hope that Keegan doesn't get the dressing down we are rumoured to believe he will in London this afternoon. I think clubs need to get a sense of reality. Kevin Keegan has arrived at Tyneside on the back of seriously poor managers, who have brought in some bad players in and the Toon boss has a huge rebuild on his hands, that isn't going to happen overnight and I'm sure most Newcastle fans are aware of that. The gap between the top 4 and the rest of the Premier League is ever growing and unless you are in a position of momentum you are going to fall further behind.

At the end of the day Keegan
At the end of the day Keegan was asked the question and gave an honest answer - what would Steve Bruce say if he was asked on his sides hopes of reaching the top 4?? I think Everton have a great chance again but Tottenham would be my tip.

Unfortunately I think Keegan
Unfortunately I think Keegan is right. In the case of Everton, villa or Spurs it mighty "only" be £100m required and £150m for everyone else. But whilst they are spending their £100m the big 4 are spanking another £50m, so they'll neer catch up. Without a major change in EPL policy, the only way the top 4 will be breached is if Arsenal or Liverpool self destruct, and someone else slips in through the back door - and then only for a season or two

Sorry, flash is not available.

I don't think it's always
I don't think it's always about the money spent (Chelsea being the exception), as Arsenal have proved it can be done on far smaller budgets. The idea is to buy shrewdly and build a team. The word here is 'TEAM'. How many times have we seen big name players bought for ludicrous sums only to upset the applecart and get left on the bench for most of the season? It's all about working out the missing pieces of the puzzle and finding team players who can fill the holes. Look at Mourinho's Monaco when they won the Champions League? Granted Ronaldo has made a truly significant impact this season for United but Everton have proved that a good 'team' can go a long way. Employing the best scouts available would be one way to ensure the quality coming in, and adopting a productive attitude towards youth policies is another. Berbatov chose Spurs over Man United, which didn't bother Fergie at the time as the Belgian wasn't the player he became merely one season later. After that, pretty much every member of the 'Big Four' were wondering how they'd missed out. Spurs achieved this through qulity scouting and instilling a belief that the club were going somewhere. Kevin Keegan doesn't appear to be adopting the same philosophy. I admit that the 'Big Four' as they currently are offer a far more attractive option to world class players both in success and wages, having dominated the four champions league places for so many years, but the Premiership is awash with money for the forthcoming season and every team will find they have more financial clout in luring Europe's finest up-and-coming players, especially now the Premiership is widely perceived as the best league in the world (if not by Blatter and Platini). The 'Big Four' cartell is far from unbreakable. Sooner or later one of these teams will go through a difficult patch. Maybe there'll be futher bodged takeover bids, or a billionaire who loses interest. The question is wether one of the flock of pretenders can grab their chance and sustain a challenge throughout a whole season . I believe it can be done and it may be sooner rather than later.

AS I Spurs fan I am obliged
AS I Spurs fan I am obliged to vote Spurs :-) Everton have to keep hold of Moyes (negoptiations ongoing), and (most importantly) keep hold of Arteta and Cahill. I think they 'got lucky' in signing Arteta and that his form has been improving steadily without 'anyone seeming to notice for so long'. And Cahill has not only been an excellent signing, the driving force of their midfield, but also extremely inexpensive (when we are on the subject of breaking into the Top Four and Big Finances). As for King Kev - I like the guy, I really do, but sometimes he is very impulsive - and this is an impulsive sweeping statement (that does hold a lot of truth in it).
