Saints PodJockey Sam Poulton reflects on the current plight of Southampton Football Club and wonders what has happened to the Saints spirit that for so long dominated the red and white army.

Let's not lie about the situation, it is bad, very bad but is it as bad as we think it is? Ok, in seasons gone by we haven't always been in the top division of course, although we did have 27 consecutive years in the top flight not that long ago.

The problem I have with the current players and squad is that I do not believe the fans feel that these individuals have the drive and self ambition that will lead us to greater achievements in the coming seasons. I do therefore believe that in terms of the players' ability, it is very difficult to judge whether this is in fact the weakest Southampton team in the last 50 years - this is clearly the most fans have ever doubted and been disillusioned with the club.

Even when relegated, and before achieving top flight status for the first time back in '66, I cannot remember there being this level of ill-feeling towards the players or indeed the management and board structure. Southampton FC throughout its history has always been well run so the fans never believed for one instance that the people currently in charge of the club would have such a detrimental effect on the club. Even before the days of Saints being a top flight club, Southampton always had the entire backing of the local media and the community and that ‘Dell sprit' that the official site and the club keep referring to, had never left us once.

Now it has, and unfortunately this is the only time I can remember that ever happening. A combination of events have led to this situation, but with the threat of relegation this season very realistic, an uncertain future stares us in the face with financial obscurity a real possibility in the short term.

In terms of squad and league status, it certainly is one of the poorest, but it is clear that these players do boast significant talent otherwise they would not have enjoyed the success of last season in reaching a play-off spot.

However, they do not have the heart and spirit which we associate with past generations of Saints sides, and for me that is why the fans have so much ill feeling towards this squad, and that is why it feels as though the club has plummeted to its lowest point in the last 50 years.

I finally agree with you for
I finally agree with you for the first time Poulton, there is nothing about the club at the moment, no spirit, no nothing. Its a great shame and one that hopefully Pearson can bring back to the club.

with three battling draws,
with three battling draws, I am disinclined to disagree with Poulton. Even the most maligned of Saints players Jason Euell gave a performance last night andif anyone saw the way he celebrated his lasp goal but extremely well taken goal could have had no doubt how much it meant to him. Nigel Pearson isnt exactly anyone's first choice for manager but it would seem that our Lawrie has hit the jackpot in picking this guy he certainly makes Burley look like a damp squib. I have a feeling that Pearson can get this team out of trouble expecially if he can inspire them to wins against fellow strugglers Coventry and Leicester at home. You can just see the confidence coming back into this side and suddenly the likes of Vignal and Wright are beginning to show what they are capable of. No player likes to be dropped and calling up the youngsters like Gillett, Baseya, McGoldrick,Llalana is proving a master-stroke. There is hope yet.
