Southampton PodJockey Jon Pitt feels that there is an air of pessimism that surrounds St Mary's and has called on Saints fans to give him reasons to be positive.

Anyone who listens to the Southampton FanCast will know that generic moaning and criticism are never more than a verbal paragraph away. Poulton the Pundit delights listeners with his failure to praise the team for a 1-0 victory. A look around indicates that a lot of people believe Southampton should be in the Premiership. This includes non-Southampton fans, who reckon Saints have played a vital part in the top league since their promotion way back in 1977.

Southampton have gone through something which every team have experienced at one point. (Except Arsenal, before you write in.) Relegation is never easy on the finances or indeed the squad. Even so, Saints are taking part in the fourth most-watched league in Europe, and last season managed to cement a play-off place which could have easily provided a bounce back up.

This season has been turbulent to say the very least. They have sustained a mid-table position throughout the year, and some say that Burley has experienced his worst managerial season in his career. But, as I write this, it looks like it's soon to come to an end, bringing in the face of someone new.

My co-host and I have discussed the managers, and we've concentrated on the reasons why they wouldn't do any good at the club. With finances supposedly in the balance, a plethora of chairmen, and thirteen different managers in as many years, Southampton F.C. has seen better times. Now, logically, the spirits at St. Mary's should still be high, but optimism seems to be at a low (or should that be Lowe?) and the team can feel this.

I've said it on the FanCasts, I'll say it now. I'm a pessimist, and I don't think Saints are going up this year. No matter whom they bring in, be it Hoddle, Coleman or Davies. So what should I do to get optimistic about Saints? Do you wear your pride and smiles when you go to St. Mary's, or are you of a similarly pessimistic nature? I want to know how to be an optimistic Saints fan, and I want reasons to smile. Come the Norwich game on the 29th, I want 25,000 optimistic fans sitting in St. Mary's, and I'm looking for tips on how it can be done.

Come on; help out a foolish pessimist in need of some sweet Saints spirit.

when will the finances be
when will the finances be sorted?? that is the hardest question. i reckon the sooner we get lowe to sell his shares, then we can start to attract more interest from some big money men. weve got a brilliant stadium, we can fill it every week in the prem, and someone will see the potential is there to get back to where we belong in the top half of the premier league. lets use the current situation to start afresh now, and bring back some life into the club with an FA Cup run, and a push for the play-offs at least!

Jon I do agree that we
Jon I do agree that we should be positive but there needs to be a degree of realsim with it as well. If we are not good enough there is no point praising the players for performance and stating that they are performing at the required standard. One thing I would love to change is that moronic halftime or early sencond half chant of who ever the manager is to sort it out, it isnt constructive and should not be used as a way of supporting the team at all.       Poulton The Pundit

at the risk of pointing out
at the risk of pointing out that we didn't get promoted in '77, this is the worst league position that we can look forward to in my time. i honestly don't see much to be optimistic about. teams that we have become used to being above such as derby and q.p.r. now have deeper pockets and more reason to be optimistic about the future than us. i don't see how in the state we are currently in we can hope to be any more than mid table ( maybe even worse ). until we are better off financially it doesn't matter who we get in to manage the team if he has to sell off anybody who garners any interest from other clubs.
