Facey looks at Spurs' new signing but
wonders whether strengthening the defence should be a priority for Ramos in the
last few days before the transfer window shuts.
Roman Palyuchenko
is set to move to White Hart Lane in the next few days after Tottenham and
Spartak Moscow agreed a fee for the Russian striker, but is there still room
for improvement in Juande Ramos' side?
Since the
departure of Keane and the expected exit of Berbatov, Spurs have been operating
with just Darren Bent in attack. Palyuchenko's arrival will ease the pressure
on the hit and miss frontman, who was the only striker selected in their last
squad, and hopefully kick start Spurs' sluggish start to the season.
"I can confirm I'm joining Tottenham," the striker said, as reported in the Guardian.
"Right now I'm getting my visa and as soon as it is ready I will fly to England to sign a contract. I won't play in Kiev. Everything has happened very quickly so I couldn't even say goodbye to my team-mates."
With Palyuchenko signed up and rumours abound that Arshavin is soon to follow, is it now priority to shore up the defensive side of the outfit?
Judging by the forums and other Spurs sites there is certainly an outcry for a holding midfielder. It is fair to say that this does seem to be the problematic area on the football pitch and Jenas and Modric in the centre doesn't seem to be the answer. The very fact that Jenas has been installed as vice captain seems to suggest that the England midfielder is indispensible in that team, so it makes you wonder if Ramos is confident that Jenas will be able to adapt to that holding midfield role in time. It certainly seems a risk, but judging by the team selection in the last few weeks, it may well be the case.
So what is the plan of action in the final days of the transfer window and will Ramos bring in any new additions in the midfield? It has been widely reported that Spurs are in the market for a centre half with Corluka being heavily touted, but is Ramos being naive to suggest that solving Spurs defensive frailties is merely down to bringing in new defenders. On paper the Spurs line looks strong, so is it not down to a lack of protection in the middle?
So are Spurs fans happy with the probable signing of Palyuchenko and is he an ideal replacement for Berbatov? Do you feel that Ramos intends to strengthen the midfield or just merely bring in a centre half? What do Spurs need to bring in to the football club to ensure their season gets back on track?
