Football FanCast columnist Fanos Kyriacou is delighted by the signing of Luka Modric and wonders if its the positive sign of things to come.
Well how about that then? Spurs have won the race to sign the highly rated and highly sought after Croatian midfielder Luka Modric. This must surely come as a surprise to fans as the playmaker has been linked with pretty much all the top sides in Europe, so it is a fantastic coup for Juande Ramos and Damien Comolli (perhaps fans might get off our sporting director's back now).
What does this now say about our intentions? The answer to that is that we have clearly struck early to show the fans, the current players and other potential big signings that we are a club with massive ambitions and we are going to do all it takes to bring real success to White Hart Lane.
One person in particular who will hopefully have been impressed by this signing is Dimitar Berbatov who must now be convinced that the club match his ambitions. Make no mistake about it, Modric could have had his pick of European clubs but chose to come to Spurs and surely that's because he and his advisors believe that we can get into the Champions League.
Modric is exactly the type of midfielder we need at the club, someone who can create and make things happen, I would suggest that players such as Jermain Jenas may be sitting a little uneasily now with their place in the side under serious threat.
All credit has to go to Levy, Comolli and Ramos for convincing Modric that Tottenham is the right place for him to come and play his football. I am convinced that this is just the start of the big signings and there will be a few more surprises before we kick off for season 2008/2009.
