Is Champions League a realistic target for Spurs next season?

Football FanCast columnist Rob Facey thinks that Robbie Keane may be getting ahead of himself in suggesting that Tottenham will be ready to compete for a Champions League spot next season.

What a difference a trophy makes. After bringing home their first cup in almost a decade, the Juande Ramos affect has got the players at Tottenham aiming for the stars next year, led by Captain Robbie Keane.

Despite indifferent league form and very inconsistent displays, both at home and away, Keane is adamant that without the off field drama that affected the start of lasts years campaign, Spurs will be challenging for Europe at the end of next season.

"We need to be doing better and everyone is focused on next season, so I think you'll see a team who'll be competing with the likes of Liverpool," Keane told The Mirror.

"Next season, the manager will have had the players from the very start. He'll bring in his own men."

Will Ramos be able to iron out the clubs inconsistencies over the preseason or will he need more than one season to turn the North Londoners into a Premier League force?

Remember, they were tipped by many to overtake Arsenal and break into the top four this season.

Or is he merely setting up the White Hart Lane faithful for another season of disappointment?

Surely it is too early for the Spurs captain to suggest that Juande Ramos can turn the club into Champions League contenders?

After exhaustive research

After exhaustive research and testing in this area I can conclude that the answer to this conundrum is affirmative. Juande Ramos's blue and white army will indeed finish 4th next season. Without doubt. I would also like to add that it will be The Arse that fail to qualify, not the 'Pool.

from what I have seen this

from what I have seen this season there is simply no chance of us getting into the Champs League, no way. We have fallen short more or less every week this season, we have underperformed and no amount of money will get us there. I wish fans would stop going on about 4th and giving ammo to all the Spurs haters out there. 5th or 6th is the best we can hope for but Everton will be stronger then us next year. We live in hope

I think that it should

I think that it should definately be an aim but I would be happy to have another trophy next year. Perhaps the UEFA cup. Im not going to expect CL qualification but I think that would be possible if we get in about 4 more top quality players. LM DM S CB if we get quality in these areas and demote the current players there then we could definately be in the mix next year.

In a word no becuase who

In a word no becuase who despite Ramos may bring in they will need time to settle.

No chance, even with large

No chance, even with large investment, Liverpool made it look men against boys at the weekend.

I would love Spurs to finish

I would love Spurs to finish fourth next season but to honest I can't see it happening. We finished 30 points off 4th this year which shows the gap is just to big. Unless we sign four or five world class players it won't happen for us. The defence is not strong enough to start with, we also need a new keeper. Then the midfield needs to be sorted, not to mention replacing Berba if he goes. Top five and a cup I think folks...to get in the Champs league you need world class players, but then world class players won't join us because we are not playing in the competition!

Im afraid that as always our

Im afraid that as always our players start to talk about success before they actually realise that it takes hard work and effort week in week out to achieve it. every season they set themselves up to look stupid by making bold statements of intent which they consistently manage to fail to acheive. Dont beleive the hype, as a spurs fan this is the second time this week I have read this sort of rubbish from our players Jenas was the other and as much as I love Robbie and his desire I just wish that they would shut up and say nothing and then go out each week and perform and demonstrate what they are thinking this way it would save alot of sniping later. Also as stated in other comments with new players they will take time to settle and Ramos aint exactly set the world on fire with us so far so expect more excuses for crap performances as the season starts as he really got a great a great response by threatening the players with their futures towards the end of last season didnt he ?? !!

Id like to think its

Id like to think its possible, lets face it, this year with the exception of the Carling Cup was a shambles and it pretty much all stemmed from the cock up with Jol. Last season we were a solid 5th and lets not forget the season before we only missed the 4th spot due to no less then half the squad being deathly ill. We have the talent to beat just about anyone if confidence is up plus Ramos will move things around, build his own squad and he knows how to win. We cant possibly have a season as bad as the first half of this one was so if we get off to a strong start then im betting yes 4th place is possible. P.s dont forget there are going to be problems next season at Arsenal and Liverpool.

I think its possible but we

I think its possible but we need the right players, the right mentality on and off the pitch and alot of tenacity. Ramos is a good coach the reason why the players did not respond to his style of management is because the majority of players on our side are not as tenacious and are lacking in that dogged determination and drive that all the big teams have. The only players I can say have those characteristics are robbie keane and steed malbranque. You can tell he has an effect on players when its needed, look at the carling cup final, look at the 4-4 draw against chelsea, look at manu's draw, liverpools draw and arsenal's 5-1 thrashing we all can honestly say we played great in those games we drew and could have won all of them apart from rubbish last minute defending. In matches that matter he makes crucial changes that have positive effects. I think we've a good coach some good players of value and with a few additions and hard work in training and performances on the pitch we can do it

Man U and Chelsea will be

Man U and Chelsea will be the top two as they have too much of a lead on the rest of the prem. Arsenal have been severely hamstrung by their financial situation. Major European clubs are able to lure away some of their top talent and as we have seen this season they do not have the depth in their squad as it is. If they do not get decent replacements in and suffer from the same injury problems to a couple of key players they will be out of the top four. If this happens they will struggle to keep Cesc beyond next season. This is unfortunate for Wenger but not as a result of as i believe like Fergie he is a manager that players want to play for. Liverpool are over rated at the moment and have done better than they probably should have done and are the most likely to drop out of the top four. Everton with a couple more quality signings are a good bet to step up. Man city are a possibility, with the right manager who can attract top talent and the money they have to go into the market with are a good outside bet. Tottenham will need time even with new signings although i think top seven is there for them dependent on the business they do in the transfer window. Ramos has the nouse to compete on a tactical level he justs needs to form his own squad, any top four talk should wait for two seasons at least. And as for you Bent Bashers wait and see - if he moves on you will see him score plenty and become the class player he is threatening to be.
