Is the Spurs boss taking the most calculated of risks?

Football FanCast columnist Bill Johnson cannot understand Spurs’ failure to address an old aged problem.

If there is one thing that you can guarantee about Tottenham is that it is never a dull place. This summer has certainly been no different with a hive of transfer activity as Juande Ramos looks to streamline his squad and make his overall mark on the football club.

From the outset it looks like a job well done and there aren’t many who will have failed to have been impressed with the arrivals. The additions of Modric, Bentley, Gomes and Dos Santos are certainly of the highest order and a damn sight improvement of what we currently have, but the failure once again of bringing in that midfield general has left me bemused beyond belief. I appreciate the window is still open, but surely this should have been the priority summer signing along with a centre half.

So why has this been overlooked? Forgive me if I’m wrong, but the only fault I saw in our squad last season, was not scoring goals but our inability to keep them out. Surrendered Spurs leads cost the club some 35pts last season and surely that should have dictated our transfer policy. I have great sympathy for the Spurs defence because man for man they are more than capable; it was just the inability of the midfield to defend which left them woefully exposed last year. What I find crazy is that every successful football club builds their team around a strong holding midfielder and yet we seem to fail to grasp that. I hope Ramos experiment of playing Jenas in that role on Saturday, won’t be repeated otherwise we may as well pack up the season. JJ has flattered to deceive for far too long and doesn’t offer anything; surely Modric deserves better than him?

I doubt many fans were surprised about Saturday’s result once they glanced at the suicidal line-up we produced. I don’t know if Ramos felt we would just out score the opposition, but he must surely realise that the Premier League doesn’t operate like that. The way Middlesbrough controlled the midfield and the scandalous amount of time they possessed must have raised some alarm bells – well you only hope they did.

Every given day we are being linked with strikers, to replace Keane and the imminent departure of Berbatov; a holding midfielder and centre half doesn’t even seem to be a passing thought. I firmly believe that ship has sailed and believe that if we were going to bring one in then they would have been already installed by now. I may be proved wrong and I look on with baited breath everyday in the hope I am, but I feel that Ramos and Comolli are taking one hell of a calculated risk in failing to address this problem.

Totally, should have been

Totally, should have been our main signing this season. By bringing in Gomes it is like Ramos is suggesting that all our problems last year were at the feet of Robinson.

Dead right Bill, every club

Dead right Bill, every club with CL aspirations has a holding midfielder or two, we have got didderly squat.

Diarra should have been our

Diarra should have been our no.1 target this summer, it is ridiculous in all honesty and im surprise that Poyet hasn't intervenened given his experience of English football.

Modric can play that DM

Modric can play that DM role, so that Jenas can play his natural box to box all-action game. Modric is no smaller than Makalele and he could still do a lot of damage offensively from a more withdrawn position - with his incisive through passes. Hudd can be the back up. No worries really, it is still early season.

How many of these players

How many of these players we're being linked to are genuine targets though? I suspect most are made up by the press. Also, didn't the Modric signing come out of the blue. The management aren't stupid and I imagine they're searching for a defensive midfielder and centre back behind the scenes. Let's wait and see what we've got after 1st Sept and then we can complian if areas have been overlooked.

Exactly. If only there were

Exactly. If only there were more articles like this. (All I seem to be reading recently is rubbish and repeated rubbish). Need a central defender to replace the injury-prone King/Woodgate/Bale. Need a holding midfield player or two! That's it. No more. No less.

Did anyone watch the game on

Did anyone watch the game on Sat? Who played the more defensive role? Was it Jenas or Modric? Or perhaps neither?!

Modric as the enforcer - no

Modric as the enforcer - no way. As someone said Diarra should have been an option. Hell maybe even Bullard is an option. Jenas and Modric don't cut it. Our best holding midfielder at present is King but he also our best central defender as well- not to mention injured more than half the time. Our backup defenders viz Dawson are not great either. I liked the look of Senna or even someone like Gattuso. When we had that terrific year we had people like Carrick and Davids playing in midfield - not to mention Tainio. We now lack that bite. The thing about a holding midfielder is that is not only about ball winning. It is more about positional play and reading the game - what Carrick is so good at. Ultimately I agree. Without a great holding midfielder and some defensive reinforcements, we will struggle.

Bring in BARRY, he is

Bring in BARRY, he is clearly up for sale at the right price and he supports Tottenham. Its a win win situation, if we have to give Villa Lennon as part of the deal as he hasnt improved in two years. He has probably gotten worse, we dont need him. If he doesnt wanna come then why dont we play O'Hara in that role, he seems the perfect solution.
